Pickerell, both of Allerton, were killed at the railroad crossing east of the depot in Allerton last Wednesday afternoon. Both of the boys were about 15 years of age and returning from the depot where they had been delivering some freight in the Pickerell Ford Truck, and were headed south when a freight that was switching on the tracks backed into the truck, overturning it and dragging it with the boys in it for about 60 feet. The Niday boy was killed outright and the Pickerall (sic) boy died before Coroner Runyon who was called there, left Allerton for home after holding an inquest. Alleron (sic), May 10--Hubert Niday, 14-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Niday was instantly killed and Glenn Pickerell, young son of E.F. Pickerell, manager of the Allerton Produce company, was terribly injured when a Ford truck in which they were riding was struck by a freight train. The Pickerell lad suffered a torn scalp, lost an arm and sustained internal injuries. He is not expected to live. The boys had delivered some freight at the depot. The train was switching on the Rock Island tracks. The car was overturned and dragged sixty feet before the train could be stopped. At two o'clock on Wednesday (just as we go to press) occurred the most terrible tragedy that has befallen Allerton in years, when Hubert Niday, the 14 year old son of Oscar Niday, living 1 3/4 miles southwest of town, was instantly killed and Glenn Pickerell, severely injured, having his scalp torn badly and an arm severed. Little hope is entertained for his recovery. He was also about 14 years of age and a son of F.E. (sic) Pickerell, manager of the Allerton Poultry (sic) Co. The boys were in the Pickerell Ford truck, returning from the depot where they had delivered some freight and were headed south when a freight that was switching on the tracks, backed onto the truck, overturning it and dragging it with the boys about 600 feet. Coroner Runyon arrived here about 5 o'clock and was arranging an inquest to be held at the Chase Undertaking Parlors at the time the News went to press.--Allerton News.
