Like many locals living in the area around the time of the Great Depression, his first language was Low German (Plattdeutsch), which he spoke with friends and family throughout his life. For eight years, Wally attended a country school a mile east of his childhood home, where the county road currently curves to the north. He graduated eighth grade as Butler County valedictorian in 1937. After a visit to the farm by the Aplington High School superintendent, Wally’s father was persuaded to allow him attend Aplington High School, where he graduated in 1941. After two weeks of college in Pella, Iowa, Wally returned to the family farm to assist his parents and siblings in their livelihood. While home, his leg was crushed when the horse he was riding slipped on wet pasture grass and fell on him. Although the bones were reset without anesthetic by a country doctor, some remained out of place. Like many young men of his generation, Wally reported to his physical exam at Fort Snelling in St. Paul, Minn., as preparation for deployment during the waning days of World War II. To his regret, he was unable to serve due his injury. On Aug. 6, 1948, Wally married his hometown sweetheart, a young teacher named Marian Best, at the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington. He and Marian were longtime members of the church, where her family was active and where he served later as an elder, led a youth group, and saw his children through confirmation. For more than 40 years, Wally and Marian lived and worked together on the Brouwer family farm where Wally was raised. They raised crops and livestock, and had four children: Pamela, Dean, Elaine and Mark. Wally and Marian moved into Aplington in 1982 and continued farming until their retirement in 1990. Marian lived with Wally at their Aplington home for many years, until her health required relocation to Maple Manor Village nursing home, where she resided until she died in October, 2017. Wally remained at home until his health concerns required him to move into assisted living, and later, full-time care. He died peacefully on June 27, 2019, at Maple Manor Village in Aplington of a culmination of age-related illnesses. Wally is survived by his four children: Pamela (John) Bantle of St. Paul, Minn.; Dean (Irene) Brouwer of Waukesha, Wis.; Elaine (James) Julstrom, of Johnston, Iowa; and Mark (Jenna) Brouwer, of Minneapolis, Minn. Additional survivors include: grandchildren Anne Bantle (Andrew Thompson) of Minneapolis, Laura Bantle (Jonathan Fischer), of St. Paul, and Alex Bantle, of St. Paul; William Julstrom, of Iowa City; Sophia Brouwer, of Waukesha; and Henrik Brouwer, of Minneapolis; and a great-grandchild, Haakon Thompson, of Minneapolis. He is survived also by a sister-in-law, Katherine Brouwer, of Aplington. Wally was preceded in death his beloved wife of 69 years, Marian; his parents, Dick and Gretje (Gertie) Brouwer siblings, Gertrude (Herman) Greenfield, Mildred (Harvey, Sr.) Ulfers, Carl (Jessie) Brouwer, Dena (John) Rotgers, and Harold Brouwer, as well as parents-in-law William “Bill” and Lena Best, brothers-in-law Mervin (Verna) Best and Howard (June) Best, and many relatives and dear friends. Wally was an industrious and resourceful man, who witnessed sweeping changes during his lifetime. Born during the Roaring ‘20s, he had clear memories of a thriving and self-sufficient family farm in which there was a goldfish pond but no electricity, and his sisters wore colorful flapper dresses and hats on weekend evenings out. With the Great Depression came financial hardship, sack-cloth clothing, summers without shoes and memories of strenuous farm work, coupled with experiences of community solidarity and hope. Wally often referred to these as some of the best, but most difficult, years of his life. High school, and the prospect of continued education, opened new vistas for Wally. He discovered classical literature, poetry, drawing, and numerous other inspirations that fed his mind and creativity. He often spoke of a pine tree (now gone) on the family farm that had a u-shaped bow in the trunk; it was where he often did his homework – and dreamed of the future – in view of the sunset and open fields and pastures along the farm’s long dirt lane. Wally’s first car was a used Ford Model A, which he purchased – bald tires and rumble seat included – during his years working in Leonard Stockdale’s repair shop in Austinville. A favorite story recounts a time the town policeman once pulled Wally over for driving the car with 11 occupants and a chicken. Long after the car was gone, Wally kept the grille, which he hung in his garage; rims, which he welded into chairs; and his wife, who he courted after a fateful first cruise together on Main Street in Aplington. Wally loved to read. Poems, such as those by Robert Service, or Christian science fiction novels by C.S. Lewis were among his favorites. He also studied the Bible and took great interest in it. He enjoyed traveling, especially his trips to the American West (a dog-eared Zane Grey in his glove box) and as well as a late-1990s heritage trip to Ostfriesland, Germany, where he stayed with distant relatives and enthusiastically rekindled his childhood tongue. He often stopped whatever he was doing to watch banks of clouds roll in during expansive and colorful prairie sunsets. “Never lose your sense of awe,” he often urged of those around him. Wally’s family and friends will long cherish memories of his humor, warmth, intellect, strength, kindness and lack of pretention, as well as his boyish enthusiasm and vulnerability. He leaves behind many fine examples of creativity, including charcoal drawings, poems, wood carvings, eloquent hand-written letters, and welded sculptures and caricatures, which he frequently drew in pencil on the backs of napkins. For many who knew him in his later years, he will be remembered for dutifully caring for his ailing wife’s needs, both at home and after she entered care. Through her last day, he arrived at her bedside each day and sat with her, silently holding her hand. The Brouwer family wishes to thank the staff at Maple Manor for its compassionate care. Memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army. Funeral Services will be 1:30 p.m., on Tuesday, at the Aplington Evangelical Presbyterian Church, with burial in the Pleasant View Cemetery, both in Aplington.
