Read More	Marian Faye Brouwer, née Best, age 89 of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of William J. and Lena (Voss) Best on April 2, 1928, Aplington, Iowa. She was raised two miles north of Aplington on a farm and attended Aplington schools. Shortly after graduating from high school in 1945, she worked on the War Bond drive and attended University of Northern Iowa Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Ia. She graduated with a teaching degree and taught at a country school in Grundy County for three years. On Aug. 6, 1948, she wed her hometown sweetheart, Wallace Brouwer, in a ceremony held at the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington. For more than 40 years, they lived and worked together on a farm north of Austinville, where they raised four children. After moving to town in 1982, they continued farming until their retirement in 1990. Marian lived with Wally at their Aplington home for many years, until her health required her to relocate to Maple Manor Village nursing home, where she resided for the past four years. Marian was a lifelong and devoted member of First Presbyterian Church in Aplington, where she taught the little ones Sunday school, and her religious faith was a considerable source of strength throughout her life. She was admired by friends and family members for her kindness, sense of fairness, and ability to accept adverse circumstances, including those that eventually claimed her health. Marian valued her close relationships with her brothers, and frequently expressed a deep desire for family love and harmony. Frequently, during her last years, she would volunteer from silence: “I’ve had a good life. I love my husband and I love my kids.” Marian was an avid gardener and tenacious bean-walker. She adored farm animals and sometimes wept at the sight of a newborn calf. She was also very proud of her skills driving a tractor (her favorite model was an IH Farmall 460). Rarely did a dog or cat cross her path that she did not befriend and love. Although Marian lived nearly all her life within a few miles of Aplington, she enjoyed travel. Her adventures included several cross-country trips with family members, a camping vacation around the circumference of Lake Superior, and, during the late 1990s, a locally sponsored heritage trip to Ostfriesland, Germany. Marian also enjoyed watching high school and college basketball tournaments and tasting new foods. It was not unknown of for her to listen to a game on the radio while watching another game on television, often while eating a big bowl of popcorn. She particularly enjoyed ice cream and shakes. Marian’s warmth, kindness and sincerity are missed by her many family members and friends. Marian died peacefully at Maple Manor Village in Aplington on Oct. 14, 2017. Marian was preceded in death by her parents, William “Bill” and Lena Best, her brothers Howard Best and Mervin Best, and a sister-in-law, Verna (Groeneveld) Best. Marian is survived by her husband of 69 years, Wallace; four children, Pamela (John) Bantle of St. Paul, Minn., Dean (Irene) Brouwer of Waukesha, Wis., Elaine (James) Julstrom, of Johnston, Iowa, and Mark (Jenna) Brouwer, of Minneapolis, Minn., six grandchildren, Anne Bantle (Andrew Thompson), Laura Bantle (Jonathan Fischer), and Alex Bantle, all of St. Paul; William Julstrom, of Johnston; Sophia Brouwer, of Waukesha; and Henrik Brouwer, of Minneapolis; and one great-grandson, Haakon Thompson, of Minneapolis; and two sisters-in-law (and dear friend) of many years, June (Groeneveld) Best, and Kathryn Brouwer of Aplington; as well as many relatives and friends. Funeral Services will 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at the Aplington Evangelical Presbyterian Church, with burial in the Pleasant View Cemetery both in Aplington. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington, and one hour before services at the church.
