Ward St., died at 11:16 a.m. July 12, 1996, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center. He was born Oct. 22, 1919, in Davis County to William and Bessie Thompson Hawkins. He married Mary K. Berry on April 10, 1946. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart Medal, Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal and Silver Star Medal, retiring in 1963 after 20 years of service. He was a resident of Ottumwa since 1963, and an employee of John Deere Ottumwa Works for 15 years. He was a member of O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 of the American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775 of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his wife; a brother, Carl Hawkins of Ottumwa; four sisters, Merita Bales of Floris, Amy Davis of Ottumwa, Lucile John of Lenox and Gladys Karr of Albia. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Larvel Hawkins; and three sisters, Blanche Penrod, Ione Brown and an infant, Samantha Hawkins. The service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home with Herman Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 and Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775, who will also serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be open after 9 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 of American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775 of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
