He single- handedly... Read More	The Daily Press (Newport News, Va.), Wed, 31 Oct 2007 Wallace W. Fletcher Wallace William Fletcher, 96, went to be with the Lord on Oct. 30, 2007. Born November 18, 1911 in Gloucester, Wallace spent his entire life living and working in Gloucester. For over 50 years he was a farmer/poultry man at his family farm on Fletcher Road. He operated a chick hatchery, where he used eggs from his hens, housed them in giant incubators, hatched them and raised for selling his eggs. He sold eggs to customers all over the area. He single- handedly grew soybeans and corn for many years. Later in life he became a barber. This proved to be a blessed second career as he met many friends and served as their barber until 1987. Wallace was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret and his second wife, Florence. He is survived by two children, Peggy Robison, of Sanford, Fla., and Wendell Fletcher, of Kissmmee, Fla.; and 2 grandchildren, Maggie and Marcus. He is also survived by three stepchildren, Keith Moore, of Chesapeake, Va.; Arlene Perry, of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., and Donna Cooper of Quitman, Miss. Included also are seven step-grandchildren and eight step-great- grandchildren. Wallace had been active in the Baptist Church all of his life. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church at Pinero for 71 years. For the last 25 years, he has been a member of Sprig Hill Baptist Church at Cobbs Creek. Here, he instituted a prayer ministry of which he was very proud. For 30 years he has been a dedicated member of Gideons International, held leadership positions, and spoke in many churches as a Gideons representative. Music was always a passion for Wallace. He sang duets, quartets and served as choir director. He was active in choir up into his 90s. For 28 years Wallace served on Gloucester County School Board (1944-1971). During his years of service, the Gloucester population expanded and careful planning for schools was iterative. He felt proud to have given this service to his beloved county. A tribute to Wallace must include his love for the game of baseball. As a child, he played whenever he had a chance. His responsibility on the farm kept his playing time limited, yet knowing that never stopped his love for the game. Beginning at an early age, Wallace began his earnest study of the game. He could quote stats about players and teams that astounded everyone. He continued to share these facts all his life. He was especially devoted to the Oakland A's. He even designed and built a replica of the A's stadium that took him over a year to complete. Working with Florence, the finished project is indeed a masterpiece. Another one of his building projects was a model of the original Ebenezer Baptist Church. Funeral services for Wallace Fletcher will be held 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, at Spring Hill Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at Andrews Funeral Home. Memorial contributions can be made to Gideons International, Riverside Walter Reed Hospice, or the Building Fund of Sprig Hill Baptist Church.
