Description	:	Wallace (Wally) Phillips Williams, born 15 July 1920, son of Alfred (2 Feb 1875-16 Apr, 1948) and Hazel Phillips (9 Sep 1883 - 2 Apr 1967) Williams on the home place his grandfather, James Williams, purchased from the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad July 30, 1870 in Section 32 of East Township with uncle Frank Williams in attendance. Wally attended Gridley Country School, located 3/4 of a mile north of the Williams home. He transferred to the Villisca school as an eighth grader and graduated from Villisca High School 1937. Wally was a Private 1st Class in Co. F. 168th Infantry and received an honorable discharge in February 1941. He was a sports enthusiast and refereed throughout Southwest Iowa for football and basketball games over 31 years and helped umpire in softball besides playing with Villisca baseball teams. Co. F., Nodaway, Prisoner of War, Braddyville. Emerson Hawks, and Mount Arbor basketball teams. Wally married Evelyn Wagaman on Feb. 28. 1943. He began farming in partnership with his parents in 1943. Wally and Evelyn look over the family farm following his father's death. They moved to the home place (where he had been born) from the 80 acres Clara Cowgill farm 2 miles southwest of Villisca in Dec. 1950. From 1964-1986 Wally worked at Villisca Purina Elevator. In 1986 he started as a meter reader for Nyman Electric and 2001 called Southwest Iowa Service Cooperative. He was on the board for Villisca Country Club, president one year, and later years helped with mowing. Wally sewed on the board for North Page Cemetery for many years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Villisca. Wally never missed his two grandchildren, Scott and Jodi Sanson, sports (soccer, baseball, t-ball, softball and basketball). Wally was very active in Villisca Booster Club and hauled players home after practice so they could participate. His daughter, Lois, was glad when Junior High games were over because dad did the refereeing and umpiring at Nodaway School. He loved working and helping the players. Lois and her father continued this interest in sports. Wally was well known to sports fans in this region, from his high school days playing football and basketball, as he officiated junior high and high school sports contests many years. He was preceded in death by his parents. Wally is survived by his wife, Evelyn, of Villisca; daughter Lois Sanson and her husband Gary of Council Bluffs, la; and grandchildren Scott and Jodi Sanson. Funeral services were held Friday. May 9. 2003 at Villisca Presbyterian Church with Rev. Sandra Wainwright officiating. Burial was at North Page Cemetery with words of comfort by Charles Mayer.
