He was born in Americus on November 1, 1920, to Albert and Christena (Edwards) Zumbrum. He graduated from Americus High School and entered the military, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp, as an airplane mechanic in the 376th Air Service Squadron, 5th Air Force, stationed in New Guinea, the Philippines and Australia during WW II. He was born in Americus on November 1, 1920, to Albert and Christena (Edwards) Zumbrum. He graduated from Americus High School and entered the military, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp, as an airplane mechanic in the 376th Air Service Squadron, 5th Air Force, stationed in New Guinea, the Philippines and Australia during WW II. Upon his return to the states, Walt married Betty Jean Keller on June 5, 1946 in Emporia, and they enjoyed over 69 years of marriage. They farmed northwest of Americus throughout their entire marriage. Walt also worked building the Turnpike, was a substitute mail carrier for Americus, and drove Americus school buses for many years. He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean of Emporia; two sons, David Zumbrum of Homewood, KS and Joseph (Terri) of Americus; a daughter, Dinah (Larry) Dykes of Topeka, KS; nine grandchildren, Jan Zumbrum of Phoenix, AZ, Mike (Carrie) Zumbrum of Meriden, KS, Michelle Zumbrum of Emporia, Paul (Tiffany) Dykes of Grain Valley, MO, Steven Dykes of Topeka, Jessica (Brad) McCarty of Nashville, TN, Alyson (Brad) Furline and Sarah (James) Mullinax both of Fairview, TN. Walt was preceded in death by two sons, John J. Zumbrum and Thomas L. Zumbrum; and two sisters, Verna Zumbrum and Mabel Phelan. Walt was a member of the Americus United Methodist Church, Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion, Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars. His military service was an important part of his life, and his story was recorded for the Kansas World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. He was able to participate in the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. with other World War II veterans in the last few years. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, September 28, 2015 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home. Pastors Lee Hoskins and Ted Inman will officiate. Burial will be in the Americus Cemetery with Military Honors by Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion and Lowry-Funston Post #1980 Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family will have a visitation from 3:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Sunday, September 27, 2015 at the funeral home. Memorials to the Veterans Memorial Arch at the Americus Cemetery can be sent in care of the funeral home. Friends may leave online condolences for the family on the funeral home's website.
