Description	:	Walter Brooke Roe was born in Helena on July 18, 1878, the son of William and Margaret Roe. On July 2, 1880, a terrible incident took place, the account as follows: "Drowned. On July 2, 1880, a terrible incident took place, the account as follows: "Drowned. The Terrible Death of Brooke Roe. At about 4:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon the thrilling cry of ‘A child lost,' rang through our streets, and soon after the sad news was communicated, that the lost darling had been found dead in the big ditch, near the junction of Rodney Street and Broadway. The child was Brooke Roe, the twenty months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Roe. A short time before the hour mentioned, the little boy had been missed by his mother, and immediate search was instituted for him. Perhaps an hour after he had left his mother's side, a bright, lovely, prattling boy, buoyant and full of life, Mrs. Kelly, one of the neighbors, found his lifeless body in the surging waters of the ditch which runs through the alley in the rear of Mr. Roe's dwelling. Throughout the length of this alley the water runs with almost the velocity of a mill-race through a flume, in some places covered and in many places open. The little fellow had either intentionally stepped in or had accidentally fallen into the rushing stream and the swift waters had borne him some forty or fifty yards below, to a place where a break in the flume's bottom causes a short jump off, into which the waters plunge with such violence that a hole has been washed under the continuation of the flume on the lower side, so that the planks there jut out over the whirlpool below. The child had been thrown over into this pool with such violence that his head caught under the jutting plank. The rushing waters caught his feet and threw them over the plank, thus leaving the head submerged, and in that position the little boy died. Physicians were summoned and everything possible done to restore the young life, but without avail. The grief stricken parents have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their sudden and overwhelming bereavement. And now let that be done which ought to have been done long ago. Let the big ditch which has for years been the standing terror of the mothers of Rodney Street and vicinity, be covered up or allowed to run dry."
