Harding Death Shocks Community Old Resident Takes Own Life--Had Been Ill For Two Years The community was shocked and saddened last Friday afternoon when it was announced that Walter C. Harding had taken his own life. Mr. Harding’s son Wallace and family had lived with him since the death of his wife in 1937….. Walter C. Harding was born in La Porte City on May 6, 1876, the son of Anna and Delas Harding, and was 67 years old at the time of his death. A resident of La Porte City all his life, he followed the trade of a harness maker for many years. He was married to Lydia Decker of Dysart in La Porte City on August 8, 1902. His wife preceded him in death on May 9, 1937. He is survived by two sons, Wallace, with whom he made his home, and Charles, who is serving in the armed forces in Italy; a daughter, Mrs. James C. Wheeler of St. Louis, Mo., and four grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Fern Harding of Los Angeles, and one brother, Charley, of La Porte City, who was on his way to Pasco, Washington. The body was taken to the Ashley and Waldroff funeral home and the funeral services were conducted on Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock, in the Evangelical church, of which he was a member. Burial was in West View cemetery. Miss Tina Bllheim sang two selections, accompanied by Mrs. Ralph Moore. The casket bearers were L.N. Wright, Harry Merchant, T.C. Kleist, Art Goldsberry, Dow Fike and John Weisenberger.
