He was born Feb. 28, 1921, in Clifton, Ill., a son of the late George Hansen and Carrie Jensen Hansen. He grew up in Illinois and served in the Marine Corps for two years during World War II on Pago Pago and in the Samoan Islands. He retired at the rank of sergeant major after 35 years of service with the S.C. Army National Guard from Headquarters Battery of the Fourth Battalion of 178th Field Artillery in Georgetown. He was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6444. He was a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose. He was the widower of Edith Jayroe Hansen, who died in 1999. Survivors include a son, W. Charles Hansen Jr. of McClellanville; a sister, Hazel Brink of Augusta, Ga.; and a grandson, Walter C. Hansen III of McClellanville. Visitation will be at the home. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church. The Rev. H. John Cribb Jr. will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Georgetown County Inc., 2591 N. Fraser St., Georgetown, SC 29440 or Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, 901 Highmarket St., Georgetown, SC 29440. Mayer Funeral Home of Georgetown is in charge.
