Schock, 84, of Ellendale will be Saturday, August 8, 2015 at 10:30 am at Zion Lutheran Church in Ellendale. The Rev. Tom Eckstein will officiate. Burial will be in Ellendale City Cemetery. Walter C. “Walt” Schock, 84, of Ellendale, ND was born February 4, 1931 to Christ B. and Elizabeth (Hoffman) Schock on a farm in McPherson County, SD. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Immanuel Church in Long Lake, SD. He attended country school near Long Lake and completed his 8th grade education in Forbes, ND. At age 16, Walt traveled south with a custom combining crew. Walt returned to Ellendale where he took a farm course at the N.I. and began farming with his dad. On June 8, 1952, he married Elsie P. Bertsch at Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley, ND. They made their home on a farm 2 miles west of Ellendale from 1953 to 1998 when they moved into their present home in Ellendale. Their daughter Shelly was born in 1956. Walt had many jobs, but his first love was farming and cattle ranching. He also worked for the State Highway Department and the Ellendale Public School System as a janitor, but he will be most remembered for his many years of driving bus. Walt loved all his kids, his fellow drivers and all the staff at the school. He served on the Ellendale Township Board for 45 years and was head usher in the Zion Lutheran Church for over 50 years. Walt was a trusted friend and neighbor and was always the first to lend a hand or to pick up the tab for coffee or a beer! Walt played as hard as he worked. He loved making music with his accordion, singing with family and friends and dancing with his sweetheart! He enjoyed deer and pheasant hunting, ice fishing and snowmobiling. He could visit with anyone and made friends with everyone who touched his life. He took great pride in keeping his home and yard neat at all times. He had an unshakeable faith and his family meant everything to him. His granddaughter Taylor was the light of his life. They shared a special bond in their love of horses and exploring nature on their walks down by the dam. He was so proud of his family and never missed an opportunity to tell others about them. Walt loved life and was not ready to stop living, but lost his fierce battle with cancer on the morning of August 3rd. He left this world peacefully with Elsie and Shelly at his side. Grateful to have shared his life are Elsie, his loving wife of 63 years, his daughter Shelly, her husband Jim and granddaughter Taylor. He is survived by his sister Ella (Johnny) Weisser; sister-in-law, Olivia Schock and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Oscar, Edwin, Gideon and Ernest and nephews, Ronald and Merlin Schock. Honorary Casketbearer is Walt’s granddaughter, Taylor. Casketbearers will be Larry Schock, Elmer Schock, Dennis Ford, Roy Miller, Don Nishek, Leland Gayman, Bill Martinko and Paul Veland. Special music by Duane and Kathy Heinrich and Ron and Marlene Rasmussen. Organist will be Marilyn Burow. Candle lighters will be Russ Zinter and James Tiegs. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ellendale has been entrusted with arrangements.
