Christopher Brestel, 35, an attorney, Russell K Shattuck, a certified public accountant both are from San Jose and William Cornelius Murphy, 48, an Oasis ranch owner. Their plane, a single-engine Cessna 170-B, apparently was caught by the Santa Ana wind, which was blowing fiercely in the area at the time according to deputy coroner of Riverside County. A witness, Banning truck driver first saw the plane at about 500 feet above the ground, traveling west through the pass. Suddenly it dropped to about 200 feet, and the plane appeared to be flying very slowly. The wings started to wobble, and the plane began to spin. It crashed into the ground headed in the opposite direction from which it had come and burst into flames immediately. The men had taken off from the Thermal airport just a short time before the crash. The plane went down about 40 miles from Thermal. Murphy was to have taken a commercial flight to San Jose Friday night, but apparently changed his mind, deciding to fly with his friends who had spent the night with him and his family in Oasis. Plane Owner: Brestel was an officer in the High Flyers Inc., a flying club based at San Jose Municipal Airport. The club reportedly is the owner of the plane. Brestel is a native of Nebraska. He is survived by his wife and three children. His parents, Walter & Gertrude Brestel, Dalton, Nebraska and two brothers, Stanley & Glenn Brestel of Nebraska Funeral services: First United Methodist Church of Campbell. Burial: Oak Hill Memorial Park.
