His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were prominent merchants in the village of Columbiana, operating a dry goods store on Main Street for many generations. Read More	WALTER DANIEL HOLLOWAY SANTA FE, N.M. - Walter Daniel Holloway, 95, passed away on Nov. 15, 2016 Mr. Holloway was born Jan. 14, 1921, in Columbiana, the son of Leo and Carrie (Smith) Holloway. His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were prominent merchants in the village of Columbiana, operating a dry goods store on Main Street for many generations. He was predeceased by his loving wives, Givah Wisler Holloway and Mena Tall Holloway, as well as his younger brother, David Leonard Holloway. Walter is survived by his daughters, Sallie Holloway, Catherine Moore, Sylvia Bailey and Monica Riley, as well as six grandchildren. Over his working lifetime, Walter was employed by four of the largest organizations of their kind, the U.S. Army Air Corps and Pan American World Airways, during and after World War II, the Boy Scouts of America and the United States Steel Corporation. Mr. Holloway joined Pan American-Africa Ltd. in 1941, to help build an air route across Middle Africa, ending in Chunking, China. After Pearl Harbor, he transferred to Pan American Atlantic Division as a Flight Engineer. In 1947, he completed his Air Corps Reserve obligation and joined the Boy Scouts of America as a Scout Executive in Akron. In 1954, he began a 31 year career with the United States Steel Corporation, beginning in Youngstown. At retirement, living in Pittsburgh, Mr. Holloway was the Corporate Director of Safety for Steel Operations, Mining, and Construction. While working, Mr. Holloway completed a B.A. Degree in Economics at Youngstown State University. He served 26 years as a Boy Scout volunteer and nine years with the Camp Fire Girls of America. Mr. Holloway served as Chairman of Accident Prevention Committees in Youngstown and Akron and National Chairman of the Iron and Steel Institute Safety Committee. In 1984, he and his first wife, Givah, retired to Pinehurst, N.C. He was an avid reader of history and greatly enjoyed playing tennis, golf and croquet. Walter served as president of the Pinehurst Sailing and Croquet clubs. Tragically, Givah passed away shortly after moving to Pinehurst. Luckily, Walter met the second love of his life, Mena, a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, homemaker, volunteer, and tournament croquet player. They lived happily together for 24 years. Walter lived a long and happy life. He was regarded by all who knew him as a patriot, “straight arrow,” mentor, and honorable man. Always calm, patient, and caring, in his later years he learned to cope with his dementia and old age with good humor and grace. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Many thanks go to all who helped in caring for him in his final years in North Carolina, California and New Mexico. His remains will be interned at Columbiana Cemetery in Columbiana.
