Mr. Jones was born in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, June 4, 1872 the son of James and Charlotte Jones. He had his made his home in Ottumwa from time to time since 1891, and continuously since 1933. Read More	Ottumwa Courier February 8, 1946 Veteran surveyor dies at age of 73 Walter E. Jones, 73 veteran geological surveyor, died at the Rest Haven Home 820 W. Pershing Ave., at 1 PM Friday. Mr. Jones was born in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, June 4, 1872 the son of James and Charlotte Jones. He had his made his home in Ottumwa from time to time since 1891, and continuously since 1933. Mr. Jones was a supervisor of a number of governmental geologic surveys. His work carried him into many foreign countries. Among his other duties was the selection of the site for Elephant Butte dam in New Mexico, and work on the Coolidge dam at San Carlos Arizona. He also did survey work on Boulder dam and on the proposed Nicaragua Canal. He retired in 1930. Surviving is his wife Mary C. Jones, of Elmonte California, three brothers, Chester A. and Moses Jones of Ottumwa and Samson Jones of Colorado Springs, Colorado, two sisters Lavina Kelly and Janette Jones of Ottumwa. His mother, father, two sisters and one brother preceded him in death, as did his only son Walter Junior, who died last October. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Monday at the Carroll Reese funeral home in charge of the Rev. R. C. Keagy of the Wesley Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Ottumwa Cemetery nephews will serve as casket bearers.
