Freauff, 85, of Yakima, passed away on October 27, 2003 at his home with his family at his side. He was born on Sept. 6, 1918 in Berthoud, [Larimer Co.] Colorado to George and Christina (Kaiser) Freauff. He was raised and attended school near Mead, Colorado, moving with his family to Portland, Oregon when he was fifteen years old. He was inducted into the United States Army in 1940 and served as an MP in the South Pacific, New Caledonia and the Philippines achieving the rank of sergeant. Upon discharge in 1945, he relocated to join his parents in Yakima, Washington. He worked for Pepsi Cola and Calhoun Motors in Yakima and Sunnyside. Later, Walter moved to Sunnyside and worked at Pitzer and Knerr Auto Parts as a salesman in the lower valley. In [13 Jun] 1950 Walter married Charlotte Rumford and they raised their daughter, Nancy, in Sunnyside. In [6 Jul] 1982 Charlotte passed away. Walt was an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his life and enjoyed woodworking in his retirement years. He played softball in the Sunnyside Men's League until he was 60 years old. He was a voracious reader and enjoyed westerns. His interests also included square dancing with the Lower Valley Square Dancers, and it was there that he met Leta Hewson. Leta and Walt were married in 1985. They enjoyed many trips to different parts of the United States as well as spending time with their friends and relatives. In 2001, shortly after Walt and Leta moved to Yakima, Walt was diagnosed with cancer. With his family's love and support, he fought a courageous battle with cancer. Walt is survived by his wife, Leta; brothers, Bill Freauff of Loveland, CO and John Freauff of Portland, OR; as well as his children: Nancy Burnett of Clearwater, FL; [step-children] Richard Hewson and his wife, Bobbie of Spokane; Glenda Kimsey and her husband, Tim of Bellevue; Kenneth Hewson and his wife, Robbie of Reno, NV; Carol Bryant and her husband, Jerry of Tacoma; and his [step] grandchildren: Laura, Samuel, and Hope Hewson; Megan and Jeff Sagen; Tyler, Tim and Sarah Kimsey; Allen and Julia Bryant; Ben and Kasey Hewson; Andrea and Kevin Key; and great-grandson, Westen Key and many other relatives. Walt was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and caring friend. His gentle sense of humor and loving encouragement brought his family and friends untold happiness. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to doctors and staff at the Yakima Cancer Care Center, the Memorial Hospice Staff and to our many friends and relatives for your loving care and assistance during Walt's illness. A memorial service will be held at 11:0 a.m. Monday, November 3, 2003 at the Sunnyside United Methodist church at 906 E. Edison Ave., Sunnyside, WA. In Walt's memory donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Memorial Hospice Center or the Sunnyside United Methodist Church Memorial Fund. Valley Hills Funeral Home, Yakima is in charge of arrangements.
