He was the middle son of Kathleen Kersey and Leroy Earl Adams. A member of the class of 1951, he was on the state champion cross country team of 1949; most proud of pitching the winning game against Bangor High School in 1951 for the Eastern Maine Championship in baseball. Adams died Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at the age of 80 years. Walter was born in Presque Isle on May 27, 1933. He was the middle son of Kathleen Kersey and Leroy Earl Adams. A member of the class of 1951, he was on the state champion cross country team of 1949; most proud of pitching the winning game against Bangor High School in 1951 for the Eastern Maine Championship in baseball. Walter served as an altar boy at St. Mary's Catholic Church beginning with Bishop Feeney. He served in the US Navy during the Korean War, sailing around Cape Horn on the USS Oriskany. He graduated from Aroostook State Teachers College in 1959, then taught school in Presque Isle for thirty years. He loved reading to his students, especially from Jack London and books of fairy tales, also he told tall tales of growing up in the country and days in the US Navy. In 1954, in Winthrop, Mass., he married Lucy-Jane Westman whom he met five years earlier at Presque Isle High School. The Westman family moved to Presque Isle when Mr. Westman became the manager of the North Eastland Hotel. Survived by his wife, Lucy-Jane of Presque Isle and children, Lisa Adams and her husband, Ricker Dahlgren of Brewer, Eleanor Doyle and her husband, Joseph Doyle of Medford, Mass., and Edward Adams of Lexington, Virginia; brothers, Richard Adams and wife, Jan of Weeks Mills, Me., Earl Adams and his wife, Sheila of Pittston, and a sister, Patricia Irving of Sarasota, Fla.; six nieces and three nephews and cousins in Maine, Florida and California, and Lucy- Jane's sisters and their families. In 1962, to augment his teachers salary, he joined the staff of Camp Waya- Auwi in Rangeley, Maine, from then until present day, the family has spent part of every summer there, for 50 years! In Presque Isle he taught many students to play basketball, baseball and introduced four-square! A graveside service will be held at Fairmount Cemetery, Presque Isle. (Bangor Daily News 10/28/2013)
