A family and nursing home memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Highmore Healthcare Center, with Pastor Roger Day officiating. Walt's ashes will be placed in the Morningside Cemetery, Ree Heights. Walter Frank Blaseg was born March 2, 1908, in the farmhouse his father built on their homestead south of Ree Heights. He was the eighth of 13 children born to Paul Carl and Regina (Wenzel) Blaseg. He attended school through the seventh grade, but then quit because he was needed to work full time on his parents' farm. He also helped on many threshing crews from the time he was a young boy. He loved sharing stories of running the steam engine tractors, and his adventures and misadventures with the crews. He married ZeEtta K. Nation June 28, 1933. They worked on farms in the Ree Heights area, and then purchased the Blaseg farm in the 40s, where they made their home. Family and friends enjoyed many card parties and barn dances there. In 1954, they rented the farm out and moved to Ft. Pierre, where Walt and his son, Verlin, helped with construction of the Oahe Dam. After the death of their son, Robert, in a car accident in 1956 at the age of 15, the Blasegs and their daughter, Marla, moved to the Highmore area, where Walt worked as a farm/ranch hand. In 1959, they moved to Ree Heights where Walt was active in the Ree Heights Fire Department, and worked for many years in the road construction business, working on many roads in the Hand and Hyde County area. Following retirement, he and Zee moved back to the Blaseg homestead, which they later sold, and lived in Mitchell, Wessington and Miller until entering the Highmore Healthcare Center in November 1995. Walt never lost his love of old tractors or showing pictures of his pride and joy, the 1942 SC Case, now owned by his grandson, Paul, of Wolsey. He is survived by his wife, ZeEtta, at the Highmore Healthcare Center; one son, Verlin (Edith) Blaseg of Wolsey, one daughter, Marla (Rem) McGeorge of Ft. Pierre, four grandchildren, Robert and Paul Blaseg, Roberta Ransom, and Justin (Joy) McGeorge, and two great-grandchildren, Natashia and Brittany Ransom; three sisters, Mrs. Regina Rehbeim of Wagner, Mrs. Josephine Bingham of Hot Springs, and Mrs. Agnes Skeba of Helena, Mont.; and one brother, Fritz, of Townsend, Mont.
