Wulf, 101, Humboldt, died Friday, March 2, 2001, at his home. He was born Jan. 10, 1900, in Garden Plain, the son of H.F.G. and Amalia Oehlert Wulf. He moved to Humboldt in 1914 and was a 1918 graduate of Humboldt High School. He attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence and Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He began working for Monarch Cement Co. while in high school, and was named company director in 1923. He served as vice president 10 years and as president from 1945-69. He served as chairman of the board from 1969 until the present. He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Humboldt; a board of control member of St. John's College in Winfield; a board member of Humboldt National Bank, Associated Industries of Kansas, and Southeast Kansas Mental Health Center. He was a trustee for Mid-West Research Institute in Kansas City, Mo.; a board member of the Kansas State Chamber of Commerce and chairman of its council for business and economic development. He served three years as a director of the state chamber. He was a founding member of Mid-America Inc. in 1957; a member of the University of Kansas School of Business advisory committee; past president of the Humboldt Rotary Club and Past commander of American Legion Algy Doty Post 118 in Humboldt. He married May Kreitzer in Wichita on May 1, 1924, and she preceded him in death. He also was preceded by a daughter, Betty Rose Wulf; a grandson, Joseph John Klimes; a brother, Robert O.; and two sisters, Martha Weerts and Amanda Fortenbaugh. He is survived by a son, Walter H. Jr. of Humboldt; two daughters, Eileen M. Robertson and Dolores M. Copley, both of Humboldt; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services were at 10:30 a.m. today at the church, with the Rev. David Meier officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Humboldt. ******** Walter was the son of Heinrich (Henry) Frederick Gearhart Wulf, Jr. and Amelia Oehlert. He married May Leota Kreitzer, 1 May 1924. Wulf, Jr. Chanute Tribune, The (KS) - Monday, March 5, 2001 Walter Wulf Sr. - Humboldt mourns loss of city supporter One of the staunchest supporters of Humboldt, both of the town and of its people, died Friday. Walter Wulf Sr. died at his home at the age of 101. Funeral services were this morning. Wulf moved to Humboldt from the Wichita area with his family in 1914 when his father became part-owner of Monarch Cement Co. At the age of 18, Wulf began working at the Humboldt plant, and until recently continued to go into his office on a regular basis. From his start of collecting overdue accounts, he worked in production and became assistant manager of the plant in the early 1920s. After the death of his father in 1934, Wulf became president of Monarch and continued to lead the business for 60 years. His son, Walter Jr., worked beside him for the past 20 years. Wulf was involved in numerous community, civic and philanthropic activities and was well-known by friends across the country. Lyndell Mosley, chief financial officer and assistant secretary/treasurer of Monarch Cement Co., worked with Wulf for 43 years. "You can't use too many adjectives when you're talking about Walter," Mosley said. "He was not only a good employer, but a great man. He was a very sincere man. His praise, his encouragement was always for others." "Walter was also very generous," Mosley said. "I remember the days before we had such good health insurance, when the company would loan money to employees. Walter would often give of his own funds. He always encouraged others. Walter will always be remembered." The praise would likely embarrass Wulf, who didn't relish being in the limelight for his accomplishments. However, he did love being surrounded by family and friends. Community birthday parties hosted for him on his 90th and 100th birthdays drew large crowds of well-wishers, and Wulf took time to visit individually with each person. Everyone, it seems, who knew Walter Wulf has a story to tell of how he touched their life. "Whenever anyone would praise him for his generosity, he would say he didn't know if he was generous or not. He was sure that others, if they could, would have given just as much," Mosley said. "Walter worried much more about others than he did about himself." Jan Coykendall, mayor of Humboldt, expressed similar sentiments. "We have lost a fine man," she said. "Walter Wulf was one of the greatest men I've ever known. He was always supportive and a very positive man who encouraged others. Walter was very good for Humboldt. We'll miss him."
