Description	:	Walter Schramm, 92, of Winner, SD, passed away on Monday, March 30, 2009, at the Winner Regional Healthcare Center in Winner, SD. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 4, at 10:00 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Winner. Burial will be in the Winner Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, April 3, from 4-7 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service all at the church. Walter John George Schramm was born on September 24, 1916 in a country home at Winner, SD. He was the fifth of 11 children born to Fred and Bertha (Mueller) Schramm. Walter spent his childhood years in and around Winner in various rural locations. He graduated from Winner High School in 1934 and later attended Huron College. He served his country from 1941-1945, first as a seaman second class in the Navy. In 1942 he became a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps and attained the rank of Major. He served as a pilot in World War II. He was very proud to have piloted a C-47 transport plane and was credited with hauling the first load of Japanese prisoners from Guadalcanal. During his military career he received the Distinguished Flying Cross. He married Verna Jonason on December 12, 1943 in Huron, SD and to this union two sons were born; Jeffrey and Thomas. Walter and Verna moved to Winner in 1946 and founded Schramm Furniture. He was joined in the business by his two sons in 1972. From 1983-1990 he was co-owner of the Ranchers National Bank along with G.E. Shoemaker and Gene Grossenburg. He served his community on the Winner School Board, Trinity Lutheran Church, Winner American Legion, V.F.W., Izaak Walton League, and South Central Development Corporation. He was mayor of Winner from 1976-1977. He was a dedicated member of the Winner Rotary Club for over 50 years and a Paul Harris Fellow. Walter is survived by his wife, Verna, sons Jeff (Sharon) and Tom (Bobbe), four grandsons, John, Mike (Rayette), Scott (Leslie), and Barry, and one granddaughter Holly Schramm. He has three great-grandchildren; Erica, Isaac and Alex. He is also survived by one sister Lois (Russell) Reed, two sister-in-laws, Irene Schramm and Marilyn Gronlund, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers; Howard, Herbert, Albert, George, Marvin, Fred Jr., and Don, and two sisters Helen and Bernice.
