Description	:	OLATHE, Colo. -- Walter "Bud" Epling, 91, of Olathe, Colorado, passed away Sunday, July 18, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Bud was born September 18, 1918 in Topeka, Kansas to James LeRoy and Martha Ellen (Smith) Epling. Read More	OLATHE, Colo. -- Walter "Bud" Epling, 91, of Olathe, Colorado, passed away Sunday, July 18, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Bud was born September 18, 1918 in Topeka, Kansas to James LeRoy and Martha Ellen (Smith) Epling. He was a forward observer in the Army during WWII, having served with HQ Battery, 99th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division. During the war he was stationed in Australia, New Guinea, Admiralty Islands, and in the Philippines at Leyte, Luzon and Samar. His unit marched into Yokohama and Tokyo, Japan on VJ Day. Bud received the Bronze Star and combat Infantryman's Badge during his military service. Bud returned to civilian life and his job at South Western Bell, in Topeka, Kan. in 1945. In 1956, he transferred to Mountain Bell Telephone in Colorado, where he worked until his retirement in 1975. Bud continued to work in the communications field after his retirement by founding High Mesa Communications, which he ran from 1978 to 1989. He never stopped working whether it was irrigating his fields; raising horses, helping out at his son Jim's business or lending a hand to his neighbors. His easy-going and friendly manner earned him friends wherever he went. Bud was a member of the American Legion and the Disabled Veterans Association. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, children Bob (Mary) Epling of Aurora, Colorado, Jim (May) Epling of Montrose, Colorado, Jody (Don) Simmons of Hilger, Montana, Buddy Epling of Olathe, Colorado, sisters Ruby Cramer and Betty Jane Schneider of Topeka, Kansas, nieces Dinah (Jim) Lane of Ozark, Missouri, Cindy (Tom) Gish of Topeka, Kansas, Ernest (Barbara) Cramer of Topeka, Kansas, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. His interment and memorial service will be held October 1, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 6th and Gage. W.L. "Bud" Epling Published in Topeka Capital-Journal on September 26, 2010
