Read More	The Newark Advocate, Newark, Ohio, Tuesday, August 12, 1930, page 1, column 4 Hangs Self In Cell In Prison ----------- Walter Priest Found Dead in Cell When Block Is Opened. ----------- Walter Loyd Priest, 47, committed suicide by hanging himself from a beam in the county jail with a strand of rope, some time between midnight last and 8 o'clock this morning. His body was discovered by Deputy L. D. Hague when he opened the cell block on the third floor this morning. Indications were that he had been dead for several hours. Another prisoner in the cell stated to Sheriff Festus Hoover this moring that he had given Priest a drink of water around midnight and that he apparently was all right at that time. The prisoners in the cell with Priest were asleep when he hung himself with a strand of quarter-inch hempen cord. Priest was brought to the county jail by Deputy C. W. Pletcher Sunday night from Mt. Vernon, where he had asked protection of the sheriff there from a gang of rum runners, whom he stated were after him. Sheriff Hoy C. Lynde of Knox county notified the local county officials that Priest, while talking to him about getting protection, suddenly ducked into a corner when a passing machine drove by the sheriff's office in Mt. Vernon. He told the sheriff that he ducked to avoid the gunfire which the autoists were opening in his direction. When his identity was learned, Priest was brought to the county jail here on safekeeping. He had not shown any signs of violence while in the custody of the officials of either county. Sheriff Hoover is attemtping to learn how Priest secured the rope, which he used to hang himself. Coroner John O. Thompson viewed the body and officially pronounced death due to hanging. It was believed that Priest, wh o was a veteran of the World war, was suffering from shell shock, which might have caused him to take his life. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Priest of Reform who survive. After attending school, he became a lineman for the Postal telegraph company until he entered the army. He is survived by his father two brothers, Erwin of Toboso and Park of near Hanover; two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Ford of Chickensville and Mrs.Nancy Boyd of Reform. Funeral services will be held at Smith chapel Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial will be made in the church cemetery. The body was taken to Criss Brothers where it was prepared for burial.
