Walter Huff died at his home in this city Tuesday morning, following an illness of but a few weeks. He was quite rugged up until a few weeks ago when he was taken ill and since that time has suffered a gradual decline. Even before his condition grew alarming to his family he announced that it was his last illness and that he would soon be summoned to his final home. The funeral was held at the Methodist church yesterday afternoon, the church being crowded with friends who came to pay their tribute of love and respect to the dead. The service was conducted by Rev. Holmes and Rev. Main(?), the former delivering the sermon. The members of the G. A. R. and W. R. C. attended in a body, the ceremony at the cemetery being conducted by the post. Walter Huff was born at Merom, Indiana, March 16, 1833, the third son of John B. and Mariah Huff, of a family of twelve children, only one of whom is now living, M. H. Huff, of Fullerton. He came with his parents to Iowa about 1850 and was married to Melinda Cushman June 22, 1854. Nine children were born to them, six sons and three daughters, of whom six are living - Susan E. Wall, of State Center, Iowa, Louella J. Burwell, of Marathon, Iowa, Clarence G., of Broken Bow, Flowers R, of Central City, Chester E., of Topeka, Kansas, and Charles C., of Central City. Mr. Huff moved to Nebraska in March 1878. He resided on a farm north of town for several years and in 1896 moved to Central City where he has since resided. He united with the Methodist church in 1871 at Loudon, Iowa. He served in the Civil war in the 89th Illinois Infantry, enlisting August 4, 1862, serving until June 10, 1865. Mr. Huff took an active interest in Grand Army affairs and was a member of the martial band, his fife being one of the instruments that was always ready for service. He has made it a point to attend all of the Platte Valley reunions held here during the past six or seven years and took a keen enjoyment in greeting the old veterans. Mr. Huff was generous in his opinions though he had vigorous ideas on all questions. He was accommodating and genial and none knew him but to like him. For the past two or three years he has been janitor at the northside school house and there his liking for children made him popular with the little folks. He lived a clean, straightforward, helpful life and his going will bring pain to many hearts, outside the family circle as well as in.
