He was raised on a farm near Pisgah and graduated from Pisgah High School in 1961. Gene received an associate's degree in accounting and worked for Dewey Chevrolet in Omaha and the Logan Mill before entering the nursing home business. On April 27, 1968 Gene married Linda Killpack in Logan at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The couple made their home and raised their four children in Woodbine. Gene and his parents purchased Rose Vista Home in Woodbine in 1972, and the family purchased Longview Home in Missouri Valley in 1974. Gene worked in this family business along with his parents, wife, brothers, and children over a period of thirty years. Gene was a lifelong member and active priesthood member and leader in the RLDS Church, now known as Community of Christ. He was pastor of the Woodbine congregation for many years and also served as president and financial officer of the district. In later years, he held the priesthood office of Evangelist. He was also active in the Woodbine Ministerial Association and served as treasurer. He enjoyed playing cards and games with family and friends and taking them out on the boat to go fishing. He seldom missed an athletic game of his kids and grandkids, and he encouraged them in sports by helping them practice and even building them a gymnasium with a basketball court and, more recently, a batting cage. He also especially enjoyed his kids' and grandkids' singing and musical performances at school and church. Gene died on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley, Iowa at the age of 71. Gene was preceded in death by his parents and infant grandchild, Megan. He is survived by his wife, Linda Sherer of Woodbine; four children Noel (Alison) Sherer, David (Amy) Sherer, Julie (George) Newton, all of Woodbine, and Aaron Sherer (Paul Smith) of Oshkosh, Wisconsin; 16 grandchildren; four brothers Lyle (Jennie) Sherer of Pisgah, Iowa, Jerry (Barb) Sherer of Oak Grove, Missouri, John (Evonne) Sherer of Missouri Valley, Iowa, and Bill (Melodie) Sherer of Happy Valley, Oregon; and many other relatives and friends. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
