Ward Leslie Sherer was born January 24, 1922, in Pisgah, Iowa to George and Blanche (Gunsolley) Sherer. Ward grew up in the Pisgah area and graduated from Pisgah High School in 1940. He worked at an aircraft factory in Buffalo, New York and in Kansas City, Missouri. On September 4, 1942, Ward married Esther Behrends in Independence, Missouri. Ward Leslie Sherer was born January 24, 1922, in Pisgah, Iowa to George and Blanche (Gunsolley) Sherer. Ward grew up in the Pisgah area and graduated from Pisgah High School in 1940. He worked at an aircraft factory in Buffalo, New York and in Kansas City, Missouri. On September 4, 1942, Ward married Esther Behrends in Independence, Missouri. He entered the US Army and served during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. After his discharge the couple farmed in the Pisgah and Logan areas. Ward also worked at Vickers in Omaha. In 1972 the couple purchased the Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine. In 1974 they purchased Longview Nursing Home in Missouri Valley. The couple retired from operating the nursing home in 1985. Esther died on September 12, 1998.
Ward was a member of the Community of Christ in Woodbine. He had served as Pastor of the Pisgah & Logan churches. Years ago he was active with the Kiwanis in Woodbine. Ward enjoyed creating stained glass pieces, etching glass, jigsaw puzzles, playing cards and traveling.
Ward died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa attaining the age of 83 years, two months, and two days.
Ward was preceded in death by his parents, wife Esther, two brothers, Rogene Sherer and Paul Sherer; two sisters, Vera Wimer and Frances Smith and a great granddaughter Megan Sherer. He is survived by his five sons, Eugene Sherer and his wife Linda of Woodbine, Iowa, Lyle Sherer and his wife Jennie of St. Helens, Oregon, Jerry Sherer and his wife Barb of Logan, Iowa, John Sherer and his wife Evonne of Missouri Valley, Iowa and Bill Sherer and his wife Melodie of Lake Oswego, Oregon; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
