Mr. Montgomery was born at Flintstone, Md., October 10, 1845, and was a Confederate veteran, having served during the Civil War in Company C., 18th Virginia Cavalry, and for some time was courier for General Stonewall Jackson. For years he was a conspicuous figure at our Decoration Day memorial services, always dressing in a natty grey uniform He was a member of James Breathed Camp, No. 1046, United Confederate Veterans, of Cumberland. In the fall of 1871, he left Springfield, Hampshire County, this state, and settled in Westernport, where he resided ever since, working at his trade as shoemaker. In 1872 he married Miss Elizabeth A. Patterson, of Springfield, who survives him. Besides the widow he leaves two sons, Herbert, who is foreman of The Herald, and Robert who resides in Westernport, and an adopted daughter, Miss Agnes. He also leaves five brothers, Eugene of Arkansas; Henry of Keyser; Lawson of Piedmont; William of Midland, and George E., of Cumberland, and one sister, Mrs. J. T. Graham of Iowa, all of whom attended the funeral except the first named brother and the sister. Mr. William Patterson, brother of Mrs. Montgomery, of Springfield, also attended the funeral, which took place from the Presbyterian church, of which the deceased was a member, Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. F. Leeper, a former pastor, officiating, who in a very touching manner spoke to the very large congregation present on the certainty of death and the necessity of being prepared, as well as paving a fitting tribute to the decased. The floral arrangements were numerous and very beautiful. The members of the B. B. Shaw Post, G. A. R., turned out in a body, accompanied by a few Confederate veterans from here and Keyser. The interment was in Philos Cemetery. The pallbearers were James O. Ross, N. R. Smoot, Wm. M. Ross, W. W. Uhl, Cam. Whitfield Jr., Fred W. Seaber, J. T. Kooken, and W. A. Bryant. Undertaker Fredlock had charge of the arrangements.
