Mr. Montgomery had been in poor health for some time but the immediate cause of his death was the result of severe injuries received by falling down a flight of steps the day before Thanksgiving. Mr. Montgomery was born and raised at Flintstone, Maryland, but afterwards resided for a time at Springfield, W. Va. from whence he moved to Westernport in 1871, where he continued to live until the summer of 1895, when he moved to Cumberland with his youngest son George E., with whom he has since made his home. Worthy Montgomery was widely and very favorably known and none but words of praise were spoken of him. For many years, he was a clerk in Messrs Jamesson & Kalbaugh store, and the many patrons of that establishment remember with pleasure his kind and courteous treatment of them. Prior to his coming to this place, Mr Montgomery had connected himself with the Southern M. E. church which he continued to attend, although he did not transfer his membership. In the year 1874, he joined Lafayette Lodge No. 3, Knights of Pythias, receiving the third rank July, 13th, remaining a beneficial member until his death. He served as Chancellor Commander from July 1 to Dec 31, 1877. He joined the Endowment Rank of that order in May 1878, in which he carried a policy for $2,000, which is made payable to his son George. The funeral services were held Monday at the residence and the remains were brought to Westernport and interred in Philos cemetery. A brother, two sisters, six sons and a daughter survive him of which Messrs. Washington and Lawson Montgomery and Mrs. J. F. Graham live among us, all of whom were present at the funeral, except his sisters Mrs. John Seeders of Romney, Mrs. John Martin of Donaldson and son Eugene of Alexander.
