He was good to the people around him, too, and was greatly admired. He was an outstanding cattleman and an extremely savvy businessman. He also was a past president of the Montana Angus Association. The third of five sons in a Hobson, Montana, ranching family, he spent his entire life in Judith Basin County. He and his wife Marian started out their married life while still teenagers, with almost nothing, and raised three children and built a successful ranch. After a lot of hard work, Wayne and Marian saved enough money to start the Basin Angus Ranch in 1972 with about 150 head of cattle and 1,500 acres of ranch land. By the time he died, Wayne had expanded the ranch to 25,000 acres and 1,200 head of cattle. Wayne left Marian at their house on the evening of March 27, 1994, to check on the pregnant cows in his calving barn. He never come home. Later that night, Marian got a ransom call demanding $1 million. Wayne was already dead, but she didn't know that. His body was found two days later. One of Wayne's trusted ranch hands killed him at the calving barn. The ranch hand was sentenced to 90 years in prison without parole but died of natural causes on July 31, 2004, while still incarcerated, at the age of 43 after a long illness.
