Description	:	Wayne 'Joe' Stewart Wayne "Joe" E. Stewart, 88, of Grand Island, formerly of Dannebrog, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Dannebrog. The Rev. Robert Carlson Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakridge Cemetery at Dannebrog, with military honors. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. Mr. Stewart was born July 7, 1915, to Chancey and Bertha Nielsen Stewart at St. Paul. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Velma; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Tom Metcalf of Des Moines, Iowa, Lonnie and Aldene Stewart of St. Paul, Randy and Louise Stewart of Silver Creek and Rodney and Colleen Stewart of Phillips; a daughter, Deanna Reinhardt of Cairo; a sister, Marjorie Flynn of South Pasadena, Calif.; and a brother and sister-in-law, Chancey and Velma Stewart of Longmont, Colo. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Mr. Stewart grew up in the Dannebrog area, where he received his education, graduating from the Dannebrog High School in 1932. He entered the United States Army in May of 1942, serving in England and the European Theater during World War II. He was discharged in August of 1945. On March 20, 1947, he was united in marriage to Velma Leschinsky Metcalf at Smith Center, Kan. In 1950, the couple moved to the family farm near Dannebrog, where they farmed and operated a Grade A dairy. In 1974, the couple moved into Dannebrog and Joe worked for the Howard County Roads Department until his retirement due to ill health. In 1998, the couple moved to the Grandview Apartments in Grand Island. Joe entered the Nebraska Veterans Home in December of 2002. He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church of Dannebrog and the Mickelsen-Larkowski American Legion Post 241 of Dannebrog, where he was a member for more than 58 years, had served as an adjutant for more than 20 years and was a past commander and county commander. Joe enjoyed being with his family and playing golf, cards and dominos. He was preceded in death by one son, Eudell; an infant daughter, Beverly; great-granddaughter, Braya; his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Elaine Stewart; and brother-in-law, Dick Flynn. ___________________________________________ Son of Chancy & Bertha (Nielsen) Stewart.
