He was born near Shell Rock on February 25, 1929, the son of Justin and Grace (Harms) Winkey. Winkey, 72 of Shell Rock, Iowa passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2002 at the Waverly Municipal Hospital in Waverly, Iowa of natural causes. He was born near Shell Rock on February 25, 1929, the son of Justin and Grace (Harms) Winkey. He was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Waverly and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Shell Rock. He attended the Excelsier Country School in rural Butler County and Shell Rock High School where he graduated in 1947. Wayne served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-1955 with majority of that time stationed at Walker Air Force Base, Roswell, New Mexico. On June 22, 1952, Wayne was united in marriage to Marilyn A. Mueller at St. Paul Lutheran Church, in Waverly. Following the birth of their first child in Roswell and discharge from the service, Wayne and his family returned to farm his home place near Shell Rock and later became owner/operator of other farms in the area. In 1980, Wayne & Marilyn moved into their present home and retired from active farming in 1992. Wayne was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock where he served in a number of leadership roles over the years including president of the congregation. Wayne also served on the Christian Crusaders Board as well as fund-raising committee for Bremwood. He served on the Security State Bank Board of Directors from the early 1980's until 1999. He was an original cast member of the Shell Rock Swing Show in 1965 and has volunteered every year since with production of the show. Wayne was also currently active in the local Lions Club and served as a township trustee. Waynes first love was his family and family activities. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren - games, horses & four wheeling on the farm, and especially fishing. Traveling the country in their motor home was an activity that he and Marilyn really enjoyed over the years. Many wonderful weekends were spent with his entire family in Des Moines, Okoboji, and Minnesota - and in 1998, the family traveled to Hawaii together. This past fall, he and Marilyn's final trip together was to the state where their life together began - New Mexico. Wayne is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Shell Rock; his son, Randy and his wife, Carol of Aplington, Iowa; his daughter, Cindy Dodd and her husband, Russ of Cedar Falls, Iowa; four special grandchildren, Lindsey & Tim Dodd and Tyler & Bryon Winkey; and by his brother, Dale Winkey and his wife, Shirley of Waverly, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Rosalie. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 4, 2002 at 10:30 AM at the Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock with Pastor Steven D. McGinley officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 3, 2002 from 1:00pm until 6:00pm with the family present from 3:00pm to 6:00pm in Shell Rock, Iowa. Memorials may be left the discretion of the family, to Faith Lutheran Church, Bremwood or to the Christian Crusaders.
