Read More	Wayne Harvey Mabry, 81, widower of Evelyn Rigby Mabry, died Monday, September 6, 2021, at Lexington Medical Center. Born February 7, 1940 in Aquadale, Stanley County, NC, he was a son of the late Harvey William Mabry and Luda Smith Mabry. He spent his childhood days milking cows, gardening, fishing, building things, and getting into trouble. He loved his heritage and was proud of being a country boy at heart. He graduated from Aquadale High School and left the simple farm life to attend the University of South Carolina in Civil Engineering with a major in Structures. He worked his way through college with various jobs along the way, including time at Owens Steel and LBC&W, where he worked alongside many of his future colleagues and business associates. In 1970, he formed Tectonics Engineering Consultants with his partners and friends, Guy White and Zach McGhee. Later he started Mabry Engineering and continued his legacy. To say he was an extraordinary engineer is understating what everyone knew. He was extremely intelligent, a great businessman, wonderful mentor and teacher. His knowledge of structural engineering reached all over the globe and it was hard to go anywhere and not find a building that had Wayne Mabry's stamp on it. Every jobsite or work associate or architecture firm had people who had a "Wayne" story. He trained many a young engineer into becoming the future of structural engineering in South Carolina and beyond. His knowledge of so many subjects is woven into the lives of many people he touched, and everyone who had a personal encounter with him probably learned something about something from him. He never wanted to stop learning or working, and worked up until the end. Besides engineering, storytelling was a gift and a passion for Wayne. To say he was a "funny guy" just doesn't do justice to his larger-than-life presence and always being "the life of the party." Every party found a large group gathered around Wayne listening to a story that you weren't exactly sure was all true. But it was a great story nonetheless. Many times, you had to research some of his "tall tales" just to find that surprisingly many of them were true. He also had the wonderful ability to enjoy stories about himself. He never took himself too seriously, and enjoyed laughing at himself as much as others enjoyed telling tales on him. He found joy in all the simple parts of life. Every meal was "the best thing he'd ever eaten." Every event, outing, supper club dinner, dance and piano recitals, ballgames, swim meet or "on the road adventures" brought him joy and pleasure as long as he was with family and friends. He was an active member of First Baptist Church and the Open Arms Sunday School, and loved being at church with his family and watching them sing in the choir. Wayne had also been a member of Cedar Grove United Methodist, Wesley United Methodist, North Trenholm Baptist, and Kilbourne Park Baptist. He shared his witness in many hours spent as chaperone, driver, cook, work crew, and whatever other roles were needed. He even sang in the choir and acted in dramas, even though these roles took some persuasion by his wife. He loved his friends and family with a selfless love, and was the most generous person. He gave unconditionally without hesitation and never any expectations in return. Along with his precious bride Lyn, he hosted many parties, usually with him at the cooker…a cooker which he probably made out of a copy machine or some other recycled office equipment. He volunteered his expertise with barbeque and homemade sauce many times for the Carolina Children's Home BBQ fundraisers, as well as countless church and graduation and birthday parties. Besides his BBQ, he always got requests for his chicken bog, mustard fried steak, or country fried rice. Wayne's favorite hobby other than working and being with family and friends was fishing. He loved to spend time on the lake fishing with his buddies. He even tried fly fishing in his middle age. Often his fishing tales were "bigger" than the fish, but he loved boating and the water and being on the lake. He spent many hours using homemade "water toys" to teach his kids and all their friends how to water ski. His garage was full of pieces and parts that he was going to make into something useful. Nothing was ever trash. He was going to use it "for something." This translated into him being able to fix almost anything. He loved helping with science projects and often had to be reminded to not do the entire thing! He spent many loving hours with his bride of almost 59 years. Wayne and Lyn shared a special bond that in later years truly weathered the commitment "in sickness and health." They demonstrated daily that opposites do attract! You can't remember Wayne telling a story without also remembering Lyn scolding him for his embellishments. She was his best friend, biggest encourager, staunchest supporter, spiritual partner and lifetime girlfriend. We know their reunion was glorious and they are doing all the things together their health in this life prevented them from doing.
