Description	:	Wayne V. Nielsen, 85, of Valley died Saturday, April 22, 2006 at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha. He was born on Aug. 2, 1920 in Silver Creek to Victor and Sarah (Kershaw) Nielsen. They lived in Silver Creek until Wayne was 2 and they moved to Valley where he worked for the railroad. He suffered with bronchitis as a young boy and in spite of missing a great deal of school, he was able to graduate from Valley High School in 1940. Nielsen, 85, of Valley died Saturday, April 22, 2006 at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha. He was born on Aug. 2, 1920 in Silver Creek to Victor and Sarah (Kershaw) Nielsen. They lived in Silver Creek until Wayne was 2 and they moved to Valley where he worked for the railroad. He suffered with bronchitis as a young boy and in spite of missing a great deal of school, he was able to graduate from Valley High School in 1940. He studied electrical construction as a young man and helped construct the electrical lines for the Nebraska Ordinance Plant near Mead. When he was called into the service in 1942, he was attached to the Naval construction unit known as the Seabees. During his service, he was involved in regaining control of the islands of the Guadalcanal, Vella LaVella, Boganville and Emirau, and was awarded four battle stars. After he returned home in December 1945, he worked as a carpenter before going to work for the Omaha Public Power District (OPPD). He worked at OPPD for 33 years, first as a lineman then an equipment operator, before retiring in 1982. He married Marianne Sullivan in June 1948. They had always made their home in Valley. After retirement, they began to spend time at their cabin in Central City, Colo. His interest in antiques led him to a leading role in the development of the Valley Historical Society. He was one of four men to initiate a holiday food drive for families in need that has now grown to provide Christmas meals for more than 280 Western Douglas County families. He has been a Cub Scout Master, head usher, city councilman for four years and mayor for four years. He was a member of United Faith Community Church (formerly Baptist-Presbyterian), Victory Lodge 310 AF & AM, Valley American Legion, retiree club of OPPD and St. James Church in Central City. Survivors include his wife, a son and four grandchildren. The funeral will be 10:30 am. Tuesday at United Faith Community Church in Valley with the Rev. Carl Ratcliff officiating. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Reichmuth Funeral Home in Valley. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Elkhorn with military honors by the Valley American Legion Post.
