Description	:	Wendell Arthur Smith was born Dec. 21, 1911, at Osceola, Iowa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Vern Smith. He was killed in an airplane crash about seven miles southeast of Lamoni in Harrison county, Missouri, on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 1963. Most of his early life was spent on the family farm near Osceola. His mother died when he was three years old. After graduating from Osceola public schools, he attended the State University of Iowa and received his degree in 1937, having worked his way through. He was killed in an airplane crash about seven miles southeast of Lamoni in Harrison county, Missouri, on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 1963. Most of his early life was spent on the family farm near Osceola. His mother died when he was three years old. After graduating from Osceola public schools, he attended the State University of Iowa and received his degree in 1937, having worked his way through. While at the university he gained prominence as a Golden Gloves boxer. On Aug. 23, 1942, he married Eileen McPherson and shortly thereafter left for service, spending three years in the European theatre. A son, Monte Arthur, was born to the Smiths in October 1946. Mr. Smith moved to Lamoni in January 1951, when he purchased the 1-H dealership here from Gibson & Peterson. He was active in flying circles here, was a member of the Flying club, and commander of the Lamoni Civil Air Patrol. He also served on the Lamoni Plan commission, the group which is charged with working out long-range plans for the city. He is survived by his wife, his father, his son, and three sisters. Funeral services were conducted at the Lamoni RLDS church Thursday, Aug. 15, with Rev. Robert Newberg and Elder Verne Deskin in charge. Burial was In Shadow Land cemetery at Osceola.
