He was born May 28, 1921, to Paul and Lois (Seaburg) Garden at Macedonia, Iowa. He moved to Norfolk in 1933 and attended school in Norfolk. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1939. He was a prisoner of war from May 6, 1942, to Sep. 11, 1945. He was discharged from the military on Feb. 8, 1946, with the rank of platoon sergeant. He married Shirley Williams on July 18, 1947, at Meadow Grove. He was self-employed with Gardens Automatic Coin Machine Co., which is now called Garden Coin. He was past commander of American Legion Post 16 in Norfolk, a lifetime member of the VFW Winter-Munson Post 1644, a member of the Elks Lodge, Eagles Club and a supporter of the Norfolk Family YMCA. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; a daughter, Wendi Kath of Norfolk; three sons and their wives, Jim and Randa and John and Natalie, all of Norfolk and Joe and Gina of Kearney; one brother, Richard of Norfolk; a sister, Janet Bridge of Norfolk and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. Garden, 78, related only the brief details of a life spent mostly in Norfolk. Had author and NBC-TV news anchor Tom Brokaw known the details, Mr. Garden might have been profiled in "The Greatest Generation." That was the best-seller Mr. Brokaw wrote on the basis of interviews with veterans of World War II. Mr. Garden was in those ranks, having joined the Marines in 1939 with Norfolk friend Jack Rice. The two were unfortunate in being part of the Marine contingent in the Philippines, captured at Corregidor finally in May 1942, when five months of resistance to Japanese attacks ended. That began a long ordeal for the late Mr. Garden, his fellow Marines and many soldiers. By the time the war ended, their ranks would be numbered in the hundreds rather than thousands. Prisoners were badly mistreated, starved and forced to serve in work details beyond the point of exhaustion. Survivors in the Philippines were sent to prison work camps in Japan. Mr. Garden, who entered the service as a vigorous, tall man of 226 pounds, was finally freed in Japan after the war in the Pacific ended in August 1945. Malnourished and sickly, he weighed a hundred pounds less. After hospitalization and with his health restored, he returned to civilian life. A survivor, the same as his Marine buddy from Norfolk, Mr. Garden married, raised a fine family, ran a successful business and was active in veterans affairs. The ranks of such men are thinning faster now, which is more reason to try to keep memories of their sacrifices alive. all spelling and punctuation as it appeared in the paper (GH)
