Description	:	Wendell Thomas "Swede" Harden, 96, passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Box Butte General Hospital with friends and neighbors by his side. Wendell was born November 15, 1915 at Ludden, North Dakota to Russell S. and Mabel M. (Konn) Harden. Later, the family moved to Nebraska and resided in Benedict, rural Whitney and rural Hemingford. Read More	Wendell Thomas "Swede" Harden, 96, passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Box Butte General Hospital with friends and neighbors by his side. Wendell was born November 15, 1915 at Ludden, North Dakota to Russell S. and Mabel M. (Konn) Harden. Later, the family moved to Nebraska and resided in Benedict, rural Whitney and rural Hemingford. On January 2, 1942 he was drafted into the army and spent nearly two years on Adak Island, Alaska, defending the Aleutian Islands from the Japanese occupation of the area. He spent the latter part of his service in Camp Hood, TX, training troops and was honorably discharged on October 22, 1945 as a Staff Sergeant. After his discharge, Wendell returned to Nebraska and married Anna Rudloff of rural Crawford in 1946. They resided with his brother on the family ranch southwest of Nenzel until his retirement in 1976 when he and his brother moved to Alliance. He worked part-time on a construction crew, building homes during the railroad boom and later worked for Barry Casey of Hemingford as a part-time hired hand. Wendell loved to do things for his friends and neighbors and never asked anything in return. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones. Wendell is survived by: sister-in-law, Alice Elder of Alliance and nieces, Joyce Kuxhausen of Elmwood, NE, Norma Dickhute of Lebanon, OR and nephew, Chester Harden of Wood River, NE. Wendell was preceded in death by: parents, brothers, Harold, Roland and Lowell Harden, sister, Lila Deora and special friend, Lucinda Ward of Hemingford. Graveside services were at the Hemingford Cemetery, Hemingford, NE.
