Mr. Maxwell, who had attained to the ripe-age of 86 years, was born on lot 27, 1st line, west, Caledon, less than a mile from the farm on which he died. He was the last surviving member of a family of five brothers and one sister, the children of James Maxwell and Deborah Lougheed, early settlers in the upper end of Caledon. He had spent fifty years on the farm where he died. This place he helped to clear and improve until he owned one of the finest farmsteads in the neighborhood. He was twice married, his first wife, Margaret Jenkins, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Jenkins, having died 27 years ago. The late Mr. Maxwell was a Fenian Raid veteran, having been a member of the Alton militia company in those stirring and anxious days. For the greater part of his life he was a staunch member of the Methodist church, but had been identified with the United church in recent years. He was an honest, hardworking man, who was highly esteemed for his integrity and his excellent qualities as a neighbor. He was a supporter of the Conservative party. His loss is mourned by his wife, two sons, John W. Maxwell, of Amaranth, and Washington Maxwell, of Los Angeles, Cal., and one daughter, Mrs. T. H. Smith, Caledon. Another son, Nelson, who lived on the homestead, died in February, 1928, Edward and Mrs. Wm. Freebury, of Caledon, some years ago, James Allen, at the age of eight years, and another child in infancy. Mr. Maxwell, while gradually failing in health, was only confined to the house for two weeks previous to his demise. The funeral, which was private, was held from his late home to the Forest Lawn Cemetery on Thursday afternoon, May 29th, his pastor Rev. E. W. McBrien, conducting the services. The pallbearers were six grandsons, Eddie and Major Smith, Leonard and Arthur Maxwell, and John and Wilfrid Freebury. Misses Mary and Olive Maxwell, Olive Freebury, Helen Maxwell and Roma Searle were the flower bearers. Floral tributes were received from the Widow, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Maxwell and family, Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Smith and family, Mrs. Nelson Maxwell and family, Mr. Washington Maxwell and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Braiden.
