Surgeon Unable to Be of Aid; Two Boys, Wilbur and James Were in Barn Together. An unusual and terrible accident occurred at the Logan Patterson farm west of town last Thursday evening which resulted in the instant death of Wilbur, little seven year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Logan Patterson. Wilbur, with his 12 year old brother, James, had been bedding down the livestock in the barn. James forked a quantity of straw and just as he lifted it a tine of the fork struck his younger brother in the back of the neck, piercing the brain just below the skull. Death was almost instantaneous. Wilbur, it is said, had just started to dart across the path of his brother. He was the unfortunate victim of a terrible circumstance, utterly unavoidable. A surgeon, hurriedly called, was of no assistance, and states that had he arrived sooner the little life would have ebbed away regardless of medical science. The entire community is shocked and saddened over the tragedy that fate played on the Patterson family and household. The little body was laid to rest on Saturday afternoon, in Oak Hill cemetery after funeral services had been conducted at the home west of town, Rev. A..B. Thutt of the Presbyterian church in charge.
