He was born on Aug. 9, 1918, at Parsons to Wilbur William and Irene Belle (Foster) Stephens. He grew up near Parsons and attended school at Parsons and Altamont. Read More	Wilbur Wayne Stephens Wilbur Wayne Stephens, 89, formerly of Parsons and Erie, died Monday evening, Feb. 4, 2008, at the Elms Haven Care Center in Thornton, Colo. He was born on Aug. 9, 1918, at Parsons to Wilbur William and Irene Belle (Foster) Stephens. He grew up near Parsons and attended school at Parsons and Altamont. He graduated from Labette County Community High School in 1936. Following graduation he enlisted in the Army at Denver while on his way to California to find work. He was stationed at Fort Warren, Wyo., with the horse-drawn field artillery. He later served in World War II in Europe. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He married Dorothy DeCow on Dec. 24, 1937, at Oswego. She preceded him in death on Nov. 19, 1992. He lived at Miami, Okla., where he worked as a mechanic and as an office machine repairman. He moved to Wichita in 1950, when he went to work for Boeing Aircraft as a machinist. He briefly worked in Tulsa for American Airlines. He moved to the Denver area in 1960 and worked at Stanley Aviation and later for Beach Aero and Rocket Research, which was later purchased by Dow Chemical. He moved to Erie following retirement. He would travel to Arizona during the winter months to visit his son. While there he met his second wife, Mary Madeline. They moved to Ogden, Utah. She preceded him in April 2007. He then moved back to the Denver area to the Northglenn Heights Assisted Living Facility to be near his daughter. He was a member of the First Christian Church at Erie, the former Veterans of Foreign Wars Post at Erie and the V.F.W. Post No. 886 at Bailey, Colo. Survivors include a son, Dwight W. Stephens of Cave Creek, Ariz.; a daughter, Carolyn Stephens of Denver; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Edna Irene Stephens; a brother; Jack Stephens; and a sister; Donna Messinger. The service will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will be in the Lake Creek Cemetery near Bartlett with military honors conducted by the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Parsons. Friends may call at the funeral home at their convenience.
