Description	:	Wilhelm Gruchow was born in Germany, September 20, 1853 and died at the home of his son, Henry Claus Gruchow, near Winnetoon, Oct 22, 1932 at the age of 79 years, 1 month and 2 days. He emigrated to America with his parents in 1873 and settled on a homestead in Knox county, near Winnetoon. He and a group of German pioneers constituted the first settlement in this locality. Read More	Wilhelm Gruchow was born in Germany, September 20, 1853 and died at the home of his son, Henry Claus Gruchow, near Winnetoon, Oct 22, 1932 at the age of 79 years, 1 month and 2 days. He emigrated to America with his parents in 1873 and settled on a homestead in Knox county, near Winnetoon. He and a group of German pioneers constituted the first settlement in this locality. He was united in marriage to Miss Magdeleana Fredrichs at Niobrara, Nebraska, August 31, 1882 and they took up their residence on his homestead south of Winnetoon where they lived and reared their family. In 1912 because of ill health and a desire to retire from active management of the farm they removed to Winnetoon, where they lived until 1920, when the wife, who had been his faithful companion and helper through all those years of trial and privation of pioneer life, was taken from him to join her loved ones in a better country. At her death he went back to the farm and has spent the remainder of his life with his children. Their home was blessed with four children, two sons and two daughters. One son died at the age of 14 years and the children now living are Henry of Winnetoon, Mrs. N.C. Jensen of Kearney, Nebr. and Mrs. P.C. Paulson of Paynesville, Minn. These with 21 grandchildren and a host of old neighbors and friends survive to mourn his lost. Mr. Gruchow was a man highly esteemed by his neighbors and held in honor in the community where he has so long resided and where he has been identified with the development of the last 50 years. He attended the Methodist church at Creighton some years ago but age and infirmity had compelled him to forgo many of these privileges and kept him close to his home. His sudden and tragic leaving has plunged the bereaved family and community into deep sorrow. Funeral services were held at ten o'clock at the M.E. church. Rev B.E. Hill, the pastor, preaching the funeral sermon. He was interred in Greenwood cemetery. ...The Creighton News WILHELM GRUCHOW TAKES OWN LIFE Found Hanging In An Outbuilding on Farm of Son The community was shocked to learn that Wilhelm Gruchow, a resident of Knox County for over fifty years, had taken his own life on Saturday afternoon at the farm home of his son, Henry Gruchow, near Winnetoon. His body was found hanging in an outbuilding, where he had committed the act. Despondency is said to have the reason for the suicide. The deceased was widely known in this community and his friends were stunned to learn of his passing. The bereaved family have the profound sympathy of all in their sad bereavement. Relatives from out of town attending the last rites were his daughters, Mrs. Selma (N.C.) Jensen of Kearney, Nebr. and Mrs. Edith (P.C.) Paulson together with her husband and son and daughter, Guy and Gladys of Paynesville, Minn and a friend of the deceased, Lloyd Quisby of Georgeville, Minn. ...The Creighton News
