Lehmkuhl, died at her home, corner of Broadway and Eighth streets, in this city [Wahoo], Wednesday, the 22nd of this month, and was buried beside her husband in Sunrise cemetery the 24th. Her funeral was largely attended by citizens of Wahoo and vicinity. There was a large number of the early settlers present who had known her for many years. Mrs. Lehmkuhl was born near the city of Neimburg, in Germany, February 15, 1838, and with her parents emigrated to Beardstown, Illinois, in the year 1845. September 10, 1856, she was married to John D. Lehmkuhl, at Beardstown. There are now living six children born of this marriage: Alonzo was born in Illinois, Fred and John in Kansas, Alice in Iowa and Ed, the present mayor of Wahoo, and Frank were born in Saunders county. Alonzo and John are prosperous farmers in this county, Fred runs a large stock ranch in Cheyenne county, this state, Ed is a partner in the firm of Lehmkuhl & Wenstrand, in this city. Alice Lehmkuhl Davis lives with her family in Fremont, Frank is in business in the western part of this state. All are married and have children. When Mr. and Mrs. Lehmkuhl were first married they commenced farming near Beardstown, Ill. In 1860 they moved to Kansas and in 1865 they moved to Fremont county, Iowa. In 1868 Mr. Lehmkuhl filed for the se 1/4 of section 12, now in Chapman precinct. In May, 1869, the family moved from Fremont county, Iowa, to their new home on the frontier. Mr. Lehmkuhl hauled the lumber for his new home from Bartlett, Fremont county, Iowa. They brought with them a small band of cattle, a few hogs, a span of horses and some colts. With this small beginning, with four small children to look after, they settled down to convert the prairie grass land to a crop producing farm, and how well they succeeded is evidenced by the large landed estate Mr. Lehmkuhl was possessed of at the time of his death. In the year 1890 Mr. Lehmkuhl purchased the M. B. Reese property and moved to Wahoo, having been twenty-one years on the farm. Mrs. Lehmkuhl was a power at the helm of the household for many years. She had great physical strength, energy and perseverance to match the same, an untiring worker, a helpmeet and a homebuilder in the fullest meaning of those two words. With a stout heart and rugged determination she faced all the hard conditions that always rise up in the path of the early pioneer in all new countries. She contributed her full share in the building up of the large inheritance that now goes to her worthy children. During her last illness she was constantly attended by one or more of her children. Everything that medical skill and kind-hearted children could do was done to relieve her suffering, but her time had come, and, as all must some time do, she had to go hence at the command of the grim messenger. She was a faithful wife, a loving mother and a kind neighbor who will be long and pleasantly remembered by those who knew her best. - Wahoo Wasp; January 30, 1908
