She was born in Zigahnen (Ziegahnen), Marienwerder, West Prussia, which is now Cygany, Marienwerder, Poland. It was never Germany. Minnie Samp was born in Segana, Germany on Feb. 19, 1858, the daughter of Daniel Samp and his wife Libbie Adam-Samp. She came to America with her parents when she was five years old. Her people settled in Clayton County, Iowa. The remainder of her life was spent in this county, in Littleport, Elkport and Edgewood. In her young womanhood she met and married Fred Peick Sr., and to their union, three children were born, two daughters and a son. The husband and their children, Mrs. Martha Towle, Mrs. Esther Thomas and Fred Peick, Jr., all preceded the wife and mother in death. In the early years of the 1900's, the Peick family moved to Edgewood and Mr. Peick purchased the Royden Drug Store in which the son, Fred, Jr., was the registered pharmacist. Mrs. Peick continued to operate the store with her son until failing health a few years ago, made it imperative that she cease active business operations. She lived in her little home in the north part of Edgewood, where her son looked after her needs in daily trips to her home. A little over a year ago she went to Volga where she has lived with her nieces, Mrs. Albert Duff and Miss Bess Samp, until her death on Tuesday evening, October 13, 1942. She was 84 years, 7 months and 24 days old. Patrons at the drug store, friends and neighbors will long remember the honest integrity of this worthy woman. She stood for what was best in the community and was highly respected citizen. Funeral services were held at the Platt Funeral Chapel, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, October 16, in charge of the Rev. Vernon Benson, pastor of the Congregational Church. Casket attendants were these business men: L. D. Zahrndt, G. N. Cropp, Dr. F. H. Stainaker, R. C. Cocking, Harley Reynolds and C. L. Jacobs. Burial was made in the Edgewood cemetery. Out of respect to one of their former associates, the buisiness houses in town were closed during the funeral services. Relatives from out of town who came to attend the funeral service for Mrs. Minnie Peick were Mr. and Mrs. Albert Duff of Volga; Mr. and Mrs. Irving Towle of Marquette; Mrs. Anna Conboy of Strawberry Point; Mrs. Charles A. Cawley of Manchester; Mrs. Emma Pardee and Mr. and Mrs. Elias Pardee of Greeley.
