Description	:	Longtime Palmer resident Willard H. Johnson, 79, died peacefully at home on Jan. 12, 1997, with family members at his side. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at United Protestant Church, 707 S. Denali St., in Palmer. The Rev. Henry Guinotte will officiate. Mr. Johnson was born on October 1, 1917, in Ellensburg, Washington, to Cecil H. and Vera Jane (Wyman) Johnson. He attended local schools and Central Washington University and then transferred to the University of Washington, where he received a degree in electrical engineering in 1943. After graduation, he went on active duty as an officer with the U.S. Army Signal Corps. For the rest of World War II, he was involved with newly emerging microwave communications technology. Following the war, he returned to Tacoma, Washington, where he was employed by a firm of consulting engineers involved in rural electrification throughout the Pacific Northwest. He married Mildred McKenzie, his wife of 53 years, in 1943. In 1959, he moved to Alaska, where he was employed by Matanuska Electric Association as chief electrical engineer. He became general manager of MEA in 1969, a post he held until his retirement in 1979. After retirement, he spent much of his time on Prince William Sound aboard his beloved vessel, the Arctic Loon. He was a member of the Palmer City Council from 1962 until 1983 and served on the first Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly. He was a charter member of the Matanuska Valley (now Palmer) Lions Club and remained active until illness interfered two years ago. He helped to organize the popular Lions Club Gun Show and served as chairman for many years. He was an active member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for 15 years and participated in the search and rescue program aboard the Arctic Loon. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Mildred of Palmer; children, Mary James of Wapato, Washington, Janet Aliseo of Palmer, and Will Johnson of Ellensburg; sister, Holly Patrick of Alta Loma, California; grandchildren, Joe Aliseo of Seattle, Laura Gutenberg of Hugo, Minn., and Kirsten James, Wapato; and great-grandchild, Joshua Gutenberg of Hugo.
