Willard died Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at Butte Healthcare Center in Butte, Nebraska. Willard M. Rust was born on the Mulehead Ranch, north of Bonesteel, South Dakota on September 25, 1923, to Sam E. and Nina A. Billick Rust. He attended rural schools and high school in Edgemont, South Dakota and graduated from Spencer High School in 1942. He served in the US Navy during World War II. On May 26, 1947, Willard was married to Gloria Hambek at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Spencer. The couple were blessed with three sons: Willard J., Roger L. and Rodney J. Willard and Gloria began their married lives on a farm near Bristow, Nebraska, operating a dairy and farming with his brother-in-law, Esty Nelson. In 1948, they had a farm sale and lived in Spencer for a short time. In 1950, Willard and Gloria moved to a farm south of Butte where they were on shares in a cattle and farming operation with Jim and Edith Roush. In 1955, they moved to their present farm northwest of Spencer. Willard worked at the carpenter and mason trades from1960 to 1970. He built several houses in the area from the basement footings, to the shingles, cabinets and all. In 1969, Willard and Gloria moved from their original farm site near the Ponca Creek, and built a new house along HWY 12, a place that Willard and Gloria called home for 43 years. That same year he drilled the first registered irrigation well in Boyd County. In 1970, Willard became an authorized dealer of Chief bins and buildings, forming Rust Construction, Inc. In 1975, he came up with a new scaffold design that would evolve into Rustgo workplatforms, shipping to over 30 countries. All three sons have been involved in both companies. He was active in all operations until he retired in 1988. Willard was very creative in wood and metal. He conceived the idea for the Rustgo mobile workplatforms and designed several of the machines used in their fabrication. In later years he excelled in woodworking, make intricate wooden bowls, plates, chalices, etc. and even an inlaid poker table for use at the Legion meetings. He was always making something until his eyesight started to fail him and he could no longer do intricate work. Willard was a member of American Legion Post #78 and served in the Firing Squad for many years. He oversaw the building of the Legion Hamburger Stand that is still used today. While Post Commander, he was instrumental in starting the “Avenue of Flags” at the local cemeteries. Willard was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Spencer, where he used his talent to construct the Christmas manger and the Easter Cross. Willard and Gloria enjoyed traveling and were able to go to the Bahamas, Acapulco and three times to Europe. In 1988, they went to Alaska with their 5th wheel camper. Willard is survived by sons, Willard J. (wife Patsy), Roger L. (wife Leslie) and Rodney J. (wife Kim), all of Spencer; grandchildren: Jason Keller of Crestwood, Kentucky, Thomas Rust of Omaha, Michael Rust (wife Pamela), Steven Rust (wife Rachel) of Lincoln, Karmen (Bobby) Dickey of Page, and Cameron Rust of Spencer; great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, Charlotte, Jameson, and Carter; brother-in-law, John Hambek of Bristow; and sister-in-law, Margaret Ludeman of Fort Pierre, South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his wife Gloria; parents, Sam and Nina Rust; a grandson, Ryan Rust; and all 12 of his brothers and sisters. (brockhausfuneralhome.com/obituary)
