Description	:	Willard Wadsworth Means passed away May 1, 2013 at his home in Susanville with his wife and family at his side. Willard was born February 1923 in Broadwater, Neb. to Walter and Winifred (Drain) Means. He attended school there and in 1941 graduated from Garden County High School in Oshkosh, Neb. after which he moved to San Diego where he worked a few months in the shipyards. Read More	Willard Wadsworth Means passed away May 1, 2013 at his home in Susanville with his wife and family at his side. Willard was born February 1923 in Broadwater, Neb. to Walter and Winifred (Drain) Means. He attended school there and in 1941 graduated from Garden County High School in Oshkosh, Neb. after which he moved to San Diego where he worked a few months in the shipyards. He went back to Broadwater where he joined the Army in January 1943. He served in the European offensive from Normandy to Central Europe and he received his honorable discharge Oct. 12, 1945 from the Army Air Force. He went into partnership at a service station with his brother-in-law where he worked for five years until they sold out. He worked at Sioux Army Depot in Sydney, Neb. for 14 years before being transferred to Sierra Army Depot in Herlong, Calif. Willard retired from Sierra Army Depot in 1982. He then worked at Sacred Heart Church in Susanville for the next six years. He retired from the church to enjoy his family, garden and friends. Willard married Viola Madden at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Oshkosh, Neb. on Feb. 21, 1949. To this union was born eight children: Steven Means, Theresa (Means) Santoro, Elizabeth (Means) Hyde, Rosemary (Means) Pierce, Sabrina (Means) Bessmer, Walter Means, Margaret (Means) DeSantis and Nancy (Means) Cardenas. Willard was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Knights of Columbus and Janesville's Jolly Elders and he volunteered for many years at the Janesville commodity program. He is survived by his wife, Viola, of 64 years; one son, Steven (Brenda), of Spanish Springs, Nev., daughters, Theresa (Steve) Santoro, of Madera, Calif., Elizabeth (Michael) Hyde, of Rocklin, Calif., Rosemary Pierce, of Yuba City, Calif., Sabrina Bessmer, of Richvale, Calif., Margaret (Pietro) DeSantis and Nancy (Terry) Cardenas, of Susanville; Willard's two brothers, Merle (Helen) Means, of Concord, Calif., and Richard (Laree) Means, of Mills, Wyo.; a number of nieces and nephews, 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Willard was preceded in death by one son, Walter Means; his parents, Walter Senior and Winifred Means; two brothers, Ivan and Earl Means; and seven sisters, Eula Golden, Hila Hoagland, Hazel Evey, Wilma Fulcher, Lois Means, Inez Vanoni and Cleta Notschle.
