This community was considerably shocked lust Friday when the report came in that the body of Wm. Fiesterman, a ranchman known practically in every part of the county, had been found in a lake near his home with a heavy iron tied to his neck. It was too late for the officers to make the forty mile drive that evening in time to make any investigation so an early start was made Saturday morning. County Attorney Curtis, Sheriff Smith, County Physician Morris and W. L. Kimbel, going to the scene of the tragedy. No Indications of Foul Play An investigation of the matter did not disclose anything that would be taken to Indicate foul play and after going over the matter and taking the circumstances into consideration the officers did not think it necessary to hold an inquest. The facts developed about as follows: Mr. Felsterman had gone to be at the usual time the evening before, sleeping with one of the sons. Sometime during the night he had dressed and gone out without waking any of the rest of the family. In the morning his absence was noted but nothing was thought of it by the members of the family as he frequently was up before the rest of the family and it was thought that he had probably gone to look after some of the cattle, he having just brought home a bunch of cattle that he had purchased. However, when some time had passed without his appearing a search was instituted and it was not long till his coat and vest was noticed hanging on a post near a small lake. Upon going to the pond Mr. Fiesterman's knife was found sticking into the post and a piece of a strap was found on the ground. Out about twenty-five yards in the pond a portion of his shirt could be seen on top of the water and feeling then that all was not well neighbors were notified and a Mr. Cooper, being the first on the scene, assisted in getting the body to the shore and taken to the house. Acted Strangely For Several Days From the appearance it would seem that Mr. Fiesterman had deliberately planned the whole thing very carefully. First going to the barn where he had gotten a line out of some light harness and taken an old railroad iron that he had used as an anvil. He had gone to the pond and after cutting a notch in the strap so that it would not slip he adjusted this to the proper length and cut off the surplus leaving the knife in the post where [he] had hung his coat and vest. He had then waded out into the deepest part of the pond, which was only about two and a half to three feet. Of course the iron had held him under and he had no doubt been dead for several hours when found. He had said nothing to anyone apparently and had left no word to indicate that he had any such intentions but now that the terrible tragedy had occurred it was noted that he had acted strangely for several days and that he had been very melancholy. No definite cause has been brot [sic] out, although several theories have been advanced. Mr. Fiesterman, who had lived in this county for a good many years, and had spent practically all of the time he had lived here as a stockman, was 52 years, 3 mouths and 2 days old at the time of his death. He leaves a wife, five children and two brothers to mourn his sad death. Interment was made in the Ash Hollow cemetery near Lewellen Sunday, the services being held from the home that morning, a large crowd of friends and neighbors paying their last respects to the deceased.
