A. Means, whose death was reported in last week's issue of The Tribune was held from the E. D. Marsh home Tuesday afternoon of last week under the auspices of Samaritan lodge No. 10 I. O. O. F., and by Ruby Rebekah lodge No. 30. The services of the parent order were beautiful and impressive as was also the religious service conducted by Rev. Whiteley of the Methodist church. While Mr. Means had been in failing health for several years and confined to his bed at intervals the news of his death came as a surprise to his many friends as he was around the house Sunday morning, but was taking his customary afternoon rest and realized that his hours were numbered and called for the family and gave each member a final farewell and remarked he was going to leave them and as the sun was sinking behind the mountains he loved so well his soul winged its flight heavenward. Deceased was a native of Maine and had lived the allotted time of man as he passed the three score and ten mark the 21st day of last April, but it was a life well spent as he was always foremost in every good work in his younger days when he was in full vigor of health and young manhood and took an active interest in temperance work. In politics he was a staunch Republican though never aspiring to public honors. He served his country by enlisting in company I 59th Missouri in April 1865 and served till the war closed in November the same year. He in company with his parents one brother and sister came to Montana in 1870 and has resided in Sheridan continuously since that time with the exception of a few years spent in California. He was never married and since the death of his mother fifteen years ago he has made his home with the E. D. Marsh family. Mr. Marsh's deceased wife was his sister. He was devotedly fond of the children whose first thoughts were for Uncle Will's comfort and happiness in his declining years. He was a charter member of Samaritan lodge No. 10 I. O. O. F., and his presence will be missed at the meetings of the parent order or auxiliary. He was a regular attendant of the yearly session of the grand lodge and had filled every office from the highest to the lowest in that august body. He was also a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, and the emblem of a free and united country draped the casket with the profusion of loves' floral tributes from the lodges and personal friends and relatives. Deceased is survived by one brother E. C. Means, who could not be reached by wire for the funeral, a number of nephews and nieces. ~~ William A. Means is listed on the Montana, County Voting Records for the year 1890, as 44 years old and born at Blue Hill, Hancock County, Maine. 'Pioneer Trails and Trials,' 1976, Madison County History Association, page 502-3, features a biographical sketch for "Captain William H. and Sarah Means," listing their six children, including son William A.(Billy) Means, born April 21, 1846 in Maine.
