The Holton Recorder, December 16, 1909. William Armstrong Smyth was born April 20, 1842 in Jefferson county, Ohio, and passed away December 15, 1909, at Holton, Kansas. When he was a child his parents removed from Jefferson county to Ashland county, Ohio. Here he attended the common schools and Savannah Academy, a Presbyterian school located at Savannah, Ashland county. November 8, 1861, at the age of 19 he enlisted in company H., 42nd, Ohio, Vol. Inf He contracted typhoid pneumonia and was sent home. After a long severe illness he reported for duty and was discharged for physical disability. As soon as he was strong enough to be accepted he re-enlisted in company E, 163rd 0. N. G. and was finally mustered out September 24, 1864. After the war he resumed his studies at Savannah and taught school. Later he was associated with his brother, Marcus, in the lumber business at Oceola, Ohio. At this place he married Miss Luretia Burns, the daughter of Rev. John Burns. Here they lived until the spring of 1873 when they came to Holton, Kansas, where his father had preceded him, with other members of the family several years before. With the exception of eight years spent in Blue Rapids, Kansas, the family has resided in Holton since that time, where he has been engaged in the insurance business with his son. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. P. D. Bonebrake and a son, Clarence H. Smyth, also by three brothers, Marcus M. Smyth of Cleveland, Ohio; John Smyth of Dayton, Ohio, Dr. M. B. Smyth of Holton, and two sisters, Mrs. Nathan McGrew of Holton and Mrs. Harland McGrew of Blue Rapids, Kansas. Mr. Smyth was in the choir of the Presbyterian church for twenty-five years and was a member of that church until he became a member of the Christian Science church ....
