Description	:	William Spurgin was born in the year 1787. He was the son of William and Elizabeth Spurgin and was born in Rowan County, North Carolina. His parents died about 1805 leaving William and his siblings Joseph, Kiziah, and Sarah orphans. William was indentured to his Uncle Isaiah and Joseph to his Uncle Josiah. He was the son of William and Elizabeth Spurgin and was born in Rowan County, North Carolina. His parents died about 1805 leaving William and his siblings Joseph, Kiziah, and Sarah orphans. William was indentured to his Uncle Isaiah and Joseph to his Uncle Josiah. It is unknown who cared for their sisters. In 1804, William's uncle Jesse went to Washington County, Indiana to prospect and scout the county as a possible home for his family. In 1805, Jesse went back to North Carolina, gathered his family and possessions, and returned to settle in the new frontier. Many from Rowan County settled there in the following years. Verbal accounts of Joseph E. Spurgeon indicate that William arrived in Washington County, Indiana in 1811 having only a horse, shovel, ax, and rifle in his possession. William's brother Joseph, and uncles Isaiah and Josiah, also settled early in Washington County. He bought land next to his future father-in-law, Archibald Johnson. Hannah Johnson became his bride. The community of settlers who arrived there at the same time as William, during the War of 1812, took refuge in the Fleenor Fort. William and the members of this pioneer community joined forces to clear the land to farm and built their homes. Indians were a real threat for Washington County settlers at this time. Scouts and border patrols were sent out to forewarn of Indian raids. The most infamous war atrocity that occurred near the Salem area was the Pigeon Roost Massacre. A group of men from the Salem area went in pursuit of the warring Indians. They had a skirmish with them, but the Indians were able to make their escape traveling north. William and Hannah were the parents of nine children. They were all raised on their farm in the beautiful Delany Creek area. Hannah died in 1837 and William in 1872. William's heirs are documented in Washington County court records. William was buried in the Peugh Cemetery. Life for these early pioneer settlers was very hard and demanding, but must have been quite exciting for those with adventuress spirits. William had lived in this hard, dangerous and exciting time, cut his home out of the wilderness, raised a family and prospered.
