(transcribed by Judy Mayfield) The Kansas Optimist Jamestown, Kansas Thursday, July 29, 1909 page 1 Obituary Wm. Gifford was born June 30th, 1833, near Cleveland, Ohio. He removed to Wisconsin in 1855 and was married to Margaret E. Clark, February 13th, 1868. To this union were born two sons, James and Joe. In 1884 the family came to Kansas and settled on a farm north of Concordia where they resided seven years. In 1891 they moved to Oregon and lived two years, coming back to Kansas from there and purchasing a farm north of the city where they lived until four years ago when they moved to Jamestown, where they have since resided. Mr. Gifford was a man who made many friends, he was of genial temperment and a kind disposition, a man who could be depended upon, a good neighbor, a kind father, and a loving husband. The last few months of his life were spent in the house on account of failing health and during the last year he never appeared down town, his illness being of such a nature as to require that he remain confined to the house. Early in the winter he became weaker and gradually lost control of himself, and during the last month or two of his sickness he required almost constant attention. Death relieved his suffering Thursday night, July 22nd, and the funeral service was held Saturday from the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. G.E. Carnahan, pastor of the United Episcopal church. A large congregation of friends and neighbors gathered to attend the service and accompany the remains to their resting place in the Jamestown cemetery. Thus passed away another of the old residents of this county, a man who died his share toward making the world better and brighter. His wife and sons who survive him have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in the removal of their husband and father. (transcribed by Judy Mayfield)
