ALVA LAWSON DIED ON WEDNESDAY Had Been In Seafood Business Here For Many Years Funeral Services This Afternoon At 2 O'Clock One of the community's most highly esteemed and beloved citizens, Capt. Alva Lawson, passed away at his home in Asbury District, near Crisfield, Wednesday shortly after noon, after a short illness, at the age of 76 years. He was the son of the late Humphrey Lawson and Mary A. Lawson, both members of old Somerset families who were closely identified with its social, religious and civic life for generations. Capt. Alva was known to hundreds of people in the tidewater sections of the lower Eastern Shore, as he had for many years been engaged in the seafood business as a shedder and packer of soft shell crabs in the summer season, and an oysterman in the winter time. He was respected for his high sense of business ethics, and everyone with whom he did business relied upon his simple word in any and all transactions. His honesty, integrity, and likableness endeared him to all who knew him. He was a very enjoyable man to know, for frequently in a droll manner he would talk of happenings in by-gone days in a way which presented those facts vividly to his listeners, and in his discussion of every day affairs his remarks were founded on sound judgment and a keen perception of the issues. He loved the water. Loved to be on it or near it. A comprehensive knowledge of oysters and crabs, where and how they grew, how best to handle them, was a guarantee in itself that the goods he offered for market were of the best. His ideas about the propagation and protection of seafood were based on the practical experience of handling and studying them over a period of many years. A fine type of citizen, energetic, progressive, yet a man always to attend to his own affairs and give advice only when asked, his death takes away one more of the "old-timers" who one by one are answering the final call to those other fields of endeavor for which they have pointed themselves all during their lives. Funeral services will be held this afternoon Friday, at 2:00 o'clock, at his home in the Byrdtown section, with Rev. J. T. Rowlenson, pastor of Asbury Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. Roy L. Tawes, officiating. Interment will be in the Asbury cemetery. The pall-bearers will be Nicholas Sterling, Andrew Sterling, Lee Tyler, Herman Riggin, Howard Tyler and George P. Lawson. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Olevia Lawson, two daughters, Mrs. W. P. Hickman of this city and Mrs. Margaret Anderson, of Chicago, Ill., and two sisters, Mrs. Algie Whit Riggin and Mrs. Lloyd Sterling, of Asbury.
