Description	:	- William Andrew Austin "Bill" Van Patten was born May 27, 1919, in Tripp County, South Dakota, to William and Hazel (Rozeboom) Van Patten. He passed away on Monday, June 16, 2003, at the Winner Regional Healthcare Center at the age of 84 years. Bill grew up in the Winner area, graduating from Winner High School in 1937. He worked for three years as a sales clerk at the Outlaw Trading Post. He entered active duty in the Army on March 4, 1941, and was awarded an honorable discharge on June 27, 1945. He was in the 1st Armored Division in... Read More	- William Andrew Austin "Bill" Van Patten was born May 27, 1919, in Tripp County, South Dakota, to William and Hazel (Rozeboom) Van Patten. He passed away on Monday, June 16, 2003, at the Winner Regional Healthcare Center at the age of 84 years. Bill grew up in the Winner area, graduating from Winner High School in 1937. He worked for three years as a sales clerk at the Outlaw Trading Post. He entered active duty in the Army on March 4, 1941, and was awarded an honorable discharge on June 27, 1945. He was in the 1st Armored Division in North Africa and chased Rommel the "Desert Fox" through the desert. He also served in Italy. In addition to the Purple Heart, he was awarded various campaign ribbons. Upon returning to Winner, Bill worked several places including the Co-op, Westside Market, Outlaw Trading Post, and in 1971 began working for the Winner School System until currently. Bill was active in many organizations including the Lions Club, VFW, American Legion, and was a member of the Winner Methodist Church. In his leisure time, Bill enjoyed camping, cooking over an open flame, and playing cards with his friends. Bill married Reva McClanahan on June 27, 1948. To this union four children were born. Bill is survived by his wife Reva of Winner; three sons: Ronald William and wife Patricia, granddaughter Rhonda of Rapid City; Donald Lloyd and wife Janet of Wichita, Kansas; Michael J. and wife Lynn, grandsons Nathan and Jonathan of Marshall, Minn.; one daughter, Lynn Renae and husband Keith DeMers, granddaughters Courtney and Kari of Colome, S.D.; and many relatives and friends.
